None of the chapters in the book shows you how to re-create the written examples and technology.Let's say that after reading this book, you will get some understanding of how the technology work. But you will not be able to create any IP phone or configure anything AT ALL from the book.The book has major technical error like that 3rd chapter when you need to prepare the router for using Cisco Configuration Professional. The author didn't write outip http authentication localI spent 30 minutes trying to figure out why my CCP keeps saying authentication failure, wrong username and password. Then I finally gave up and went googling, wow this command is required to make CCP work.How can the 3rd chapter already failed miserably. I mean this is the 1st step in configuring your laptop to studying the remaining materials?Then if you keep reading onto chapter 5 about Cisco Communication Manager. Good luck understanding it. Jeremy (the author) didn't even bother telling you how to get this software and how to install it so that you can study about it. Not at all.In summary, the book is not practical because you cannot practice using it. It has no lab example, no instruction on how to obtain the software, the hardware, and the necessary commands to put all of what you learn into a working products.In fact, if you finish reading this book, you will not be able to create a VOIP phone. If you walk to an interview and they ask you how much will it costs to create 200 IP phones, you will not have a single clue. That is how inconsiderate this book was written.I feel like the author wrote this book obviously because he was passionate about the technology. But not passionate about helping the readers to understand it and to be able to use it to actually create a working product after knowing about VOIP technology. I mean what is the point then after all this is a technical book, not an ancient Egyptian mythology.
I've written less than 5 online reviews ever, which makes me more of a taker than contributor to the online world, since I rely heavily on reviews for purchasing decisions.... but this book is worth reviewing. I have my CCNA, CCNP, CCNA Security and CCNP Security, now I am working on my CCNA Voice - this is the best Cisco press book I have ever read aside from the CCNP Route book written by Wendell Odom. It has a great balance of technical information and practical explanations that tie everything together very welland make learning more linear, rather than flipping back and fourth. This book also has personality and witty humor, which is so rare in technical books. The author's passion really shows through and makes this book, dangerously close to a very enjoyable read.
If you've watched Jeremy Cioara's CBT nuggets, then you have a pretty good idea of how this book is going to go. Mr. Cioara certainly knows his material, and if you study this book and truly learn what it covers, you will pass the CCNA Voice exam (I did) without needing another CCNA Voice supplement. However, his style of prose is somewhat similar to his style of speaking; that is to say, rambling and occasionally abrupt in topic changes.I'm a huge nerd (as the name suggests) and find this book, for me, five star material. But it doesn't really click for many of the people I work with, so I'm giving it four stars since I understand that not everyone learns the same way. If you love Wendell Odom's dry, precise style, you'll have trouble with this. If Mr. Odom puts you to sleep, give this a read.In fact, if you're working toward CCNA Voice or just use a moderate amount of Cisco VoIP in your day to day, get this book in the electronic form. It's cheap and has an excellent amount of information.
I purchased the kindle version, I'm at 40% of the book when I'm writing this review, I haven't read other Cisco voice books so I can't make a comparison.Pros:1- Jeremy's way of explaining is very simple and clear, I have 7 years telecom experience with fixed and mobile networks and decided to move into the SIP world, and was curious how Jeremy will explain the legacy network section, I don't think it can be done simpler than the way he explains it.2- The book structure is very good, you can build up the full picture through the chapters even if you have no knowledge with the world of Cisco voice (which I didn't have).3- The amount of information about each part is adequate, written in a short way, and the writer doesn't get you lost into deep details, which is the way I prefer, maybe other readers prefer the long detailed way!?cons:1- Pictures are small, I'm reading on a 24inch monitor and can't read many snapshots' contents easily, full page should be used instead for several pictures to make it easy to read.2- No page numbers, this is common in many kindle books, a percentage is used instead.3- The CD provided with the printed version of the book is not available with the kindle edition, I believe its very easy for the publisher to arrange with Amazon to provide a download link along with a username/password for each client purchases the ebook version.
