Geoffrey Firmin, a former British consul, has come to Quauhnahuac, Mexico. His debilitating malaise is drinking, an activity that has overshadowed his life. On the most fateful day of the consul's life—the Day of the Dead, 1938—his wife, Yvonne, arrives in Quauhnahuac, inspired by a vision of life together away from Mexico and the circumstances that have driven their relationship to the brink of collapse. She is determined to rescue Firmin and their failing marriage, but her mission is further complicated by the presence of Hugh, the consul's half brother, and Jacques, a childhood friend. The events of this one significant day unfold against an unforgettable backdrop of a Mexico at once magical and diabolical.Under the Volcano remains one of literature's most powerful and lyrical statements on the human condition, and a brilliant portrayal of one man's constant struggle against the elemental forces that threaten to destroy him.

Geoffrey Firmin is a former British consul living in Quauhnahuac, Mexico, and his life is dissolving. A raging alcoholic, suffering from delirium tremens, he is unable to survive without drinking constantly. The downward spiral seems complete, and he has crashed. His wife, Yvonne, comes to Quauhnahuac hoping to save him, resurrect their failed marriage and take him out of Mexico. The presence of Geoffrey’s half-brother, Hugh, complicates her plans - along with bitter memories of a love triangle that ended their marriage. Set during the Day of the Dead, 1938, it will be a decisive day for Geoffrey. This novel was absolutely astonishing. As soon as I read the last, devastating sentence, I threw it onto my All-Time Favorites List; it landed near the top. Malcolm Lowry may not be considered a modernist writer - I haven’t seen him on any list of modernists - but the stream of consciousness style of writing was on full display, and I was enthralled with it. Geoffrey’s way of thinking, thrashed by the booze and hopelessness, Yvonne’s desire to have a better life with him, and Hugh’s feelings about the situation - all of these were so well crafted. And the descriptions of the locations around Quauhnahuac in the shadow of the volcano were excellent. A tragic, flawless novel. Pathos out the wazoo in this one. Highly recommended.

Some say this novel is one of the best of the last century. Others couldn't stand it or finish it. I finished it but only to keep from calling myself a quitter. The novel was hard to follow, The sentences ran on for a page or more which was very distracting. The descriptions of Mexico were vivid, and the most redeeming feature of the entire novel. Three sections were background of each of the main characters to explain how they got to this point in their lives and that was about the only coherent part of the book. Other parts were just the ravings/halucinations of an alcoholic. The last section is the culmination of all the backstories, but I not only couldn't follow what was happening, I didn't even care, I was just glad it was over.

What a masterpice.... It is haunting, insightful, poetic and tragic -- but it takes a gentle spirit and an open heart to appreciate its mysteries. It is similar in topic and theme to Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim by Conrad. It also helps to have had some experience in traveling throughout Mexico (not staying at a resort) to appreciate the sense of doom and desperation of the people and to become sensitized to the tragic sense that pervades Mexican culture and traditions. But this is not absolutely necessary. If I were teaching a class with Under the Volcano, I would include the sociological and historical events that envelop its characters, show videos of Mexican fiestas, and present some of the realities of 500 years of colonial oppression. Alchoholism is of course not significant in itself, except in its relation to the deliberately self-destructive trajectory of the narrator. This novel reminded me also of Lord Jim by Conrad.

I first bought this book after reading a recommendation by Stephen King in his book "On Writing: a memoir of the craft" which is also an enlightening and entertaining read. Under the Volcano stands up to King's recommendation as one of the great novels of the 20th century. The writing is "different" than modern books (written in the 1950's I believe). However, the writing is fantastic, well done, and the writer breaks 'the writing rules' often, but it suits his style. This is an engaging love/tragedy as I prefer to classify it. This is a difficult read if you only have time to read occasionally. This is something you want to read deeply for a few hours at a time, otherwise it's easy to lose your place.I highly recommend this book for readers and for serious writers to study the craft.

Perhaps Malcolm Lowry could have written about a place hotter or more humid than the mythical Quernavaca (Quanhnahuac). but could he have created any place more inhospitable for a very hung over and emotionally spent Geoffry Fermin or more exotic and full of foreboding as this mythical place haunted by 2 volcanos swept up in strange festivals for Day of the Dead; a Mexican mash up of Catholic and Pagan rituals? It's of this place and Fermin's complete capitulation to lost love that that Malcolm Lowry writes about so poetically and so full of vigor, rich in imagery and metaphor that one can spend a perhaps a lifetime dicing and slicing it.With a plot that is largely revealed in the first chapter one is left with perhaps the greatest prequel ever that focuses on the devastation and total loss that Fermin feels with his wife's departure. The purpose of continuing despite knowing what happens is the words. Start reading out loud and suddenly the novel takes on a life of his own. If I were teaching an English class I'd have the students read a page each from Fermin's love letter at the end of chapter one. It's a blend of passion, beauty, eloquence and alliteration that is thoroughly original and unique. I will surely read that section over and over. It's more than gorgeous, it's rhapsodic. Who would best stand on a stage and read it as part of bringing this book to life? It's fun to think about.Chapter after chapter. literally hour by hour, Lowry follows Fermin through a day that's full of crowds, drinking, confusion, misunderstanding, hints of past mistakes and regrets and not a shred of hope for the future. It is unrelenting but so beautifully told and so intense that one may pinch oneself as a reminder that is just a book.I could go on and on. Certainly it's a book that rewards the patient reader and is not one that lends itself to killing time at an airport but in the right quiet place this is one very special ride. I consider my comments merely a placeholder for surely one must read this book repeatedly. I've read it twice now and many passages repeatedly and it still feels fresh and new.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* The world has changed in the six years since the eighth edition of this atlas was published, and the new edition reflects some of the changes. The basic arrangement and look of the atlas are similar, but there is an interesting focus on major trouble spots in the worldIraq and Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Korean Peninsula, and the Caucasus (which includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia)with each allotted double-page map spreads. There are also new maps for Greenland, the Amazon region, Greece and the Aegean Sea, and the Horn of Africa. The continent of Africa, which has 20 percent of the land of the earth, is shown in four maps. Atlases have always been a help in understanding the daily news. A recent article in the New York Times told of a volcanic eruption of Mount Merapi in Indonesia. The location of the volcano is not in the atlas, but a nearby city affected by the eruption, Yogyakarta, is. The desert area of the Chilean mine disaster can be found as well as two of the towns in Switzerland near the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which, when completed, will be the longest tunnel in the world. The Oceans section has been completely redone and is easier to read, with land masses in black and the oceans in blue. There is also a new index for the undersea features. The Space section has been updated with a new map of Mars showing its eastern and western hemispheres on a double-page spread. The Flags and Facts pages in the Nations section have been redesigned, rewritten, and updated and now include more data as well as larger locator maps. The all-important place-name index has increased to more than 150,000 names. As new features are added, sections are eliminated, and the ninth edition has no city maps. National Geographic should be commended for publishing a new atlas in these times of fewer print reference sources. Print atlases still have a use in libraries or in personal collections, and the ninth edition is recommended for any library that does not have an up-to-date atlas. The good news is that the list price is only $10 more than the eighth edition. --Christine Bulson

Love this Atlas. I had the 6th edition (along with the NG Historical Atlas of the World) and it was time to upgrade. Keep your eye out for specials on Amazon. . .I got this for $70 on special, and with my Amazon Prme, no additional charge for shipping.Only problem was with shipping from Amazon. The package always arrived on time, but it took four attempts to get an undamaged copy from their facility in Kentucky. For an organization that started out selling books over the internet, you would think that they would have mastered the art of packaging high cost books. Throughout the process of getting this tome shipped to me, amazon did not once use bubbl-wrap or place sufficient packing material inside to prevent the book and its slipcase from sliding about inside the shipping box. Additionally, the shipping boxes always arrived with shipping damage from the carrier - crushed corners, punctures, etc. the final shipment arrived with scuff marks from the cardboard box because the atlas was sliding around inside the shipping box. Fortunately, those scuff marks were confined to the thin, plastic shrink-wrap around the book and slipcase.Overall, it took 6-8 weeks from the time I ordered the book (with Amazon Prime) until I received an undamaged copy of the atlas. This, despite many e-mails, photographs, chat sessions and telephone calls between me Amazon Customer Service and me.Bottom line: Great piece of work by National Geographic. Poor Marks to Amazon on their shipping and handling.

As expected from National Geographic. I grew up with the 5th edition of this atlas, and now that I need it for my kids this was my first choice. The atlas (dare I call it a book) opens to 2 feet x 1.5 feet which allows for copious detail on the pages. On the front cover and back cover are keys to the plates to help you find the right map quickly. The first 20 plates are global in scope and detail not only the basics, such as the world physical and political maps, but also tectonics, climate, demographics, resources, and trade, with multiple whole world insets detailing subsets of data. The atlas is then broken down by continent. Each of the continents excluding Antarctica also have a physical plate and political plate.N. America: 22 plates, counting an additional Physical map of the United States (being a US centric Atlas).S. America: 5 platesEurope: 14 platesAsia: 13 platesAfrica: 5 platesOceania: 5 plates (AU Physical, AU Political, NZ & New Guinea Political, Pacific Basin Political, Pacific Island Inset Plate).7 plates: Antarctica Physical, Arctic Ocean (North Pole) Political, and 5 Ocean Floor plates (the fifth being a South Pole plate)10 plates include maps of select cities from around the world7 extra-terrestrial plates: N. Sky, S. Sky, Lunar, Mars, Solar System, Milky Way, and Known Universe14 plates with tables of flags, fast facts, and figures. Included here are the US states and CA provinces. The atlas also includes a list of abbreviations, foreign terms, an intro to modern map making and projections. Finally, the atlas has a 134p index of places. The index includes a section for lunar locations and sites of human lunar activity. All around, the atlas is as good as it has ever been.

As a dedicated cartophile I have collected hundreds of atlases, including every edition of the National geographic Atlas in the last 40 years. The maps continue to be superb, BUT the emphasis is overwhelmingly on the northern hemisphere and islands. There are detailed maps of the United States, Canada and Europe, but once south of the Equator there are none. This is an ongoing NGS fault.South Africa, the Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires area, and southeast Australia are examples of areas where detailed maps would be appropriate.Australia, the same size as the USA and more than twice the size of the European Union is covered by just one map. Perversely the most remotely populated areas of Australia (Cape York and top end of the Northern Territory) are covered in great detail on the edge of the Papua-New Guinea map. New Zealand and Papua-New Guinea, both a fraction the size of Australia, are mapped in far greater detail, and uninhabited Pacific and Antarctic islands receive detailed coverage. Maps of the areas mentioned above have been published by the NGS, just not in their atlases. Many of the thematic maps at the beginning of the atlas are new, but some are too predictable. The maps of cell phone subscriptions, traditional phone lines and personal computers are almost identical. The map showing passenger flights totally ignores South America and the fourth busiest air route in the world between Sydney and Melbourne. And just what is the "Mexico City effect" mentioned on the Natural Hazards map. It is not defined anywhere on the map or its caption.Even the mighty NGS can make mistakes. On the map of the Arctic Ocean Floor, Alaska's Kenai Peninsula is labeled as Seward Peninsula, while the true Seward Peninsula at Bering Strait is correctly labeled.Overall the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World is yet to be beaten.

It is a good price, and well made. The artwork is obviously bitmap scans of older and better books, however, so pixelation is obvious and everpresent throughout. There are smaller, cheaper, black-bound volumes available of each individual book with hand-redrawn artwork that looks much better (though those books have their flaws as well). The content is the same in all of these lapsed-copyright reproductions so it really comes down to which one you think looks good on your shelf, and this one is not bad at all.

Saw the movie the Nun. Valak the demon whom the nun is based off is a demon found in the lesser keys of Salomon. The book feels nice in your hands. The book gave me nightmares. Got rid of book. Great deal on a book to fill your head with demons. Fun experience.

Is what I ordered and a pretty good read if a little bit hard to believe.

It was an excellent book. Very informative and Loved reading about King Solomon's experiences with the knowledge,Understanding and Wisdom givin to him. It was also Very sad.... but a lesson that teaches who reads. Wonder if there is a book that goes more in detail about the magic and the cleansing before the magic and how to go it in more detail....

Just received the book a couple days ago and it is great! Powerful book, easy to read and full of information. A great book to start with if you don't want to buy all the books in separately. I do feel as if it takes a little long to get to the meat and potatoes of the thing but I'd recommend buying. Also, though the scanned photos in the book aren't of the best qaullity, you can still read and see them just fine.

I would not recommend this book to children, as the content is for mature people. Parts are scary but it is a great read in small doses.

Great product thanks

The New Oxford American Dictionary

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Recently there has been publicity about young lexicographers and their work with major American dictionaries. Erin McKean, 34, is the editor of the second edition of The New Oxford American Dictionary (NOAD) and continues the tradition of publishing a well-researched and current source of U.S. English. The first edition, with different editors, was published in 2001. What has changed in four years?Words, of course, have been added and deleted. There are more than 2,000 new entries. Google and weblog are now in, information superhighway is out. The type appears larger, and a line or two has been added to the brief country histories to bring them up to date. Another addition is the useful feature "The Right Word," which discusses synonyms. An example is the entry for attack, which, in addition to a half-column definition, has another half-column discussing the differences in meanings for the synonyms assault, besiege, charge, molest, and storm, among others. The first edition was criticized for not having a pronunciation key on every page, something the new edition remedies. The lists of U.S. presidents and states, tables of weights and measures, and most other features of the ready-reference section remain, but the lists of members of selected halls of fames have been dropped in favor of a "Language Guide," which includes commonly misspelled words and redundant expressions. Definitions continue to be organized around the "core" meanings--that is, "the one that represents the most literal use that the word has in ordinary modern American usage." Similar to other current dictionaries, biographical, proper, and place-names are included--al Qaeda; Botox; 9/11; Rice, Condoleezza; Splenda; and Sunni Triangle are new additions to NOAD. Black-and-white photographs and line drawings are still interspersed in the text, with the entry for novelist Nadine Gordimer now having a photo. Julia Child's and Ronald Reagan's deaths in 2004 are noted.NOAD is more current than its closest rival in size, the fourth edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (2000). For any library that did not purchase the first edition of NOAD, or wants to keep its dictionary collection up to date, this is a buy. Christine BulsonCopyright © American Library Association. This is the paper version of the dictionary included in Mac OS X. I use the built-in one the most, but like to grab this one when away from the computer. Sometimes paper is better on the eyes too. What I like most about this dictionary is the succinct definitions. They are easy to understand and don't send me on a word hunt with definitions that require definitions--explain the explanation syndrome. What I like least is the weight. It's paper and there are a lot of definitions in it, so it is bound to be heavy. The hard-cover keeps it together pretty well. This is a great dictionary than I can definitely recommend.

I hope hardback is the only option! This is a full dictionary in a font that you can read without a magnifying glass. Many people only use the computer to check words, but having a dictionary in the house is vital for when you have a quick question and the computer is not on or the internet is down or you want more than a two sentence definition fast. This book is a gem for scrabble lovers (the scrabble dictionary sucks and is missing too many words). Definitions are well put and it includes history of many words and an occasional drawing. The only dictionary if you are an American word snob in my opinion; my editor friends agree.

Got this Second Edition at a great deal. This edition still has the old CD for registration, which I don't believe works any longer. The print and font are just the right size. The binding is sewn and sturdy. The derivation of words is easy to read and understand, complete with a 'how to use the dictionary' section at the front. The thumb index and finding words with the guide words atop each page makes for fast look-up.Recommended.

Buying a dictionary is for me about getting enough words versus the size and weight of the book . With that in mind I find that I need a dictionary that has 250,000 words which this one has and with that comes a large heavy book . There just is no way to resolve this conflict . My only complaint is the photos of movie stars and presidents throughout. Why is this in there ? It will easily make the book dated in no time and more importantly seems to be sending a message that these are the really important people in the world.

American users should be alerted to the fact that the "New Oxford American Dictionary" is founded on the "New Oxford Dictionary of English," which has been retitled the "Oxford Dictionary of English." The NODE and the ODE, when considered on their own, are excellent--especially when one realizes that they place contemporary English usage in a global context, which is helpful for both ESL students and US citizens who may be unaware that international nuances exist. So, the chief problem with the NOAD is that it presents itself as being American but cannot escape from being essentially British in outlook. As a result, many strange definitions and usage examples are to be found when considered from an American perspective. For those who wish to use a one-volume dictionary that more adequately represents American English as it is spoken and used in the United States, the Random House Webster's College Dictionary or the Webster's New World College Dictionary would seem to be preferable to the NOAD, with the ODE or the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary being consulted for more obscure words and definitions, or for obtaining a better idea of how English is used internationally.

Best dictionary available, in my opinion. Love it! I am a creative writer and use it often for that. We are avid and highly competitive Scrabble players, and this dictionary has settled a lot of "disagreements" about what is and what is not a real word.

This is a great dictionary. I love it because I have referred to it many times since purchasing it and have always found the answers to what I am looking for. It has helped me with game show questions, crossword puzzles and word debates between my husband and I. It is so much more than just a dictionary. The only reason I did not rate this dictionary a "5" is because of it's size. It is quite large and bulky, but then again, if it wasn't - it might not contain all the answers I was searching for. This is truly an informative book which I would highly recommend.

NOAD is the best single-volume American English dictionary I know. In my opinion, the best single-volume dictionary of the English language is the British dictionary entitled Collins English Dictionary in Color.I have over ten abridged desk monolingual dictionaries; NOAD stands out in my shelf altogether with Collins followed by The American Heritage.NOAD impresses because of its contextual examples. They are based on a corpus incorporating over a hundred millions words. The best dictionaries support on linguistics corpus because they use natural examples that bring English to "life". That is, this corpus has millions of sentences extracted from authentic spoken and written language.According to the official Oxford site, all their dictionaries are based on huge linguistics corpus -- over one billion occurrences. If you are interested, however, in purchasing the best unabridged dictionaries for a reasonable price; I would recommend the "Webster's New Third International Dictionary" and "The Compact Oxford English Dictionary", 1991 -- the most authoritative sources of the English language.
