About the Author

G. Gary Demerjian, DDS, graduated from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, San Francisco, in 1990 and undertook various postgraduate studies. For more than two decades he has run a private practice with a focus on the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders and sleep disordered breathing/sleep apnea. In 2014, Dr. Demerjian was awarded the position of Project Scientist, Department of Oral Biology, UCLA School of Dentistry and a position as a sleep physician at Fontana Kaiser Sleep Centr to treat obstructive sleep apnea with oral orthotics. Dr. Demerjian is a Diplomate of  American Board of Craniofacial Pain, American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, American Board of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine, American Academy of Integrative Pain Management, American Board of Forensic Dentistry, American College of Forensic Examiners. A Fellow of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain and the International College of Craniomandibular Orthopedics. Is certified as a RPSGT - Registered Polysomnographic Technologist. He has been an active member of the Evidence Based Decisions-Practice-Based Research Network since 2010. Furthermore, he has given many presentations on topics concerning the temporomandibular joint at national and international meetings. He has several publications related to his research and clinical expertise. Andre Barkhordarian, M.S., Ph.D.; is a Project Scientist and a Lecturer in the Division of Oral Biology and Medicine at the UCLA School of Dentistry. He chairs an advanced course in Osteoimmunology and teaches courses in Immunology, Bone Biology, Biostatistics (research design, methodology, data analysis), Evidence Based Medicine and Dentistry. He is the faculty lecturer for the UCLA Pre-College Science Education Program, the STEM pipeline programs at UCLA School of Dentistry, and was the faculty consultant at the UCLA Graduate Division collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to increase fellowship resources. He has conducted translational research in the domain of Cell Biology, Osteoimmunology/Immunology for the pursuit of proteomic biomarkers of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), and related comorbid neurological pathologies. His research includes translational effectiveness, research synthesis methodology and data analysis (acceptable sampling analysis, meta-analysis, individual patient data analysis), and its implications and applications in Evidence-Based Medicine and Dentistry and its related areas of study. He is the Chief Executive Officer of the Evidence Based Decisions-Practice-Based Research Network and has published several articles and book chapters related to his research.Francesco Chiappelli, PhD; Dr. Endo (h.c.), is a Professor in the Division of Oral Biology and Medicine and jointly the Division of Associated Clinical Specialties, UCLA School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, California. Among also holds a faculty position in the Department of the Health Sciences at the California State University, Northridge, and hold a Conjoint Professor position at the University of Newcastle, Australia.  He is recognized as a Fellow of the America Association for the Advancement of Science, and an Overseas Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine for his contribution to the field of translational research and effectiveness in health care.  He is a Champion of Evidence-Based Dentistry for the American Dental Association, and the Honorary President of the Brazilian Society of EBD/CER. He served as a Fulbright Specialist in Evidence-Based Medicine/Dentistry in Brazil. He is the founder and director of the Evidence Based Decisions-Practice-Based Research Network. Great book. Good story. Not too long, not too short. Really helps remind us adults and teach young children that God is good, and that He loves us. Really the perfect length for a bedtime story.

This is a childrens book inspired by the contemporary Christian worship song "Good, Good Father."The book follows a little bear along in a plot to offer a gift to the King of the land so that he can get the King to help his friends. Along the way many offer him ideas of what the King would like and which tell us a little about the King. The bear gets confused about who the King really is but continues on his way to give the King a gift. Upon meeting the King, the bear discovers that the King is a good father to whom he can always go and will always delight and enjoy being with him.The book has an important biblical message for all of us of the open arms of God presented in a warm way that children can grasp.I am a pastor reviewing this children's book and I loved the basic message of the book. The illustrations are good. The only criticism I have is that it seems a weird plot line to me personally that Tucker, the bear, feels the need to bribe the King with a gift to receive His help. That part is a little awkward for me personally connecting with the plotline but aside from that, it is a good book with a good message.

This book is well-written, easy to read aloud, and brightly illustrated. The parallels between the King and God are not vague. Chris Tomlin and Pat Barrett did a great job telling the story of a little bear who wants to know what the King is like. Immersive and entertaining, Good Good Father allows parents and their children to discover that, not only is God the King, He is also the Good, Good Father indeed.My kids love this book, and request it every night for bedtime reading. If you are looking for a book that will engage your kids in a discussion about the Father, I strongly recommend Good Good Father. 5 stars indeed!!!

I purchased this book as well as the board book version. Based on a Chris Tomlin song, these books tell a very special story of love. It is now on my top ten list of truly GREAT stories to read to the littles in my life!Too often in our world, our kids get caught up in cartoons - both books and video/video games - with too much violence and not enough love and kindness (in my opinion as a long time educator). If you want to expose your kiddos to a sweet message of love with beautiful artwork, this is a great one to grab!

It's a cute story. Those of us who know the song can appreciate the nuance of how privileged we are that Jesus revealed God as the good Father to us. For the child who doesn't know Jesus, however, it's only a cute story about a figure who could be easily confused with their Daddy. So in spite of the cute, I found it lacking in telling my 3 and 4 year olds anything that could feed their spirit. Which is the only reason I purchased this book.

We haven't actually read the book yet but I would say the earliest age a child would be interested in this book might be around 8. The cover is a little deceiving on the age frame. I had thought it might be more for young children, but I doubt my age 6 grandson who is very much into science would be able to sit through the stories and find them interesting.

Incredible book! Such a great illustration of how God loves us, and how when we come to Him, He runs to welcome us and is eager to help us. Bought one as a children's gift. Then, after reading it, bought 1 for myself - to remind me of my Father's constant love - not based on my performance or anything I can give Him but on His abundant, freely given, love for me. I actually read it to my college-age son, and he was touched. So I bought one for him for Christmas and told him it was to remind him of God's unconditional love for him - and that one day he could read it to his own children.

I ordered this book after listening to the radio and hearing the author give a brief run down of the first part of it. I just had to know the ending.... I read the whole book and it is now one of my favorite children's books. I will be buying for any baby showers I go to in the future

Then, you refine the code to solve additional problems, including some that are caused by your early solutions. You wind up with something that looks very much like the official vector. The best part is that you understand why it looks that way and what it does. Even though you'll probably never (and probably shouldn't) build your own vector, you walk away with a clear understanding of a gigantic stack of concepts -- all based on a real-world challenge.I don't have any meaningful negative criticism, but the book is not quite perfect. I understand not wanting to "hype" language features, but I felt that some things were unnecessarily muted. For instance, I feel like lots of people don't really understand the way that memory works or the dangers of not carefully allocating/freeing it. The material covers that, but introduces the related problems quite a bit later than I would expect and with a subdued tone. A close reading of the text mitigates that concern. Having an instructor to show you what to draw red boxes around would help a lot, as well.

Why, it is all about the author Bjarne Stroustrup, who literally wrote the book on C++. That's right this is the same guy that invented C++ back in the 1970's! A programming language that after 40 years still dominates the computing world (a world where most devices and software are obsolete in only two or three years).Not only does this book have the advantage of being written by the potentate of code himself. Mr Stroustrup, co-authored this book with a 20 year veteran (literally & figuratively) teacher Lawrence Petersen. This partnership makes the book not just authoritatively informational, but also easily and enjoyably readable. Each concept builds on the previous in a gentle flowing manner. So if you take the time to run the actual source samples, and do the numerous drills, and excercises between these covers you will quickly (and relatively easily) be programming proficiently in C++.After reading this book, I am a more proficient and better coder. I wish this book had been available twenty years ago! Yes, this is a college text book for programming. However, the intelligent, quality of authoring makes it a geniunely pleasant read. Anyone who works in IT/IS or even just uses a computer professionally will benefit from reading this book. Someone who genuinely wishes to learn how to program (even a language other than C++), should consider beginning with this book!

A great first step for a beginning programmer looking to develop in a statically typed language such as C++. It contains concepts that help make someone think like a programmer and real world examples to test those concepts. While much of the book is mostly based on programming using C++ as a tool it contains a great deal of information that helps build the fundamentals of programming along side it.However I should mention that although this book is designed for beginners I would not hand this book to someone who is completely computer illiterate or ill-informed of what programming truly is. This is what I would deem to be collegiate level reading.

For example, the 1848 Penny Red stamp provides West an entrée into the devastating potato famine that impacted millions, but the only link to the stamp is its Irish postmark. Similarly, the financial crisis in 2008 is illustrated by a stamp commemorating Lloyd&'s of London issued in 1999. I never found "history" to be entertaining in school.Although every chapter begins with (and is illustrated by) a postage stamp (Did you know 33 billion (yes, billion) copies of the Penny Lilac, 1881 were issued?), most of the chapters are dedicated to what was going on (in Britain & America & around the world) at the time of issue.

I enjoyed learning British history through Chris West's introduction of 36 postage stamps. It was very interesting to see how the changes in the stamps reflected what was going on in Britain during that particular time period. An excellent read!

Bought this for my husband who loves all things British, is a big history buff and collects stamps.....a perfect match for his interests. Loved how his face lit up as he opened his gift.....he had never heard of the book - I confiscated the review so he wouldn't buy it for himself.

I liked it so much I bought another to give away at Christmas; an excellent combination of facts and entertainment.

Being casually interested in British stamps, I found this a fascinating read on the subject.

Since I love stamps and history this was a great book for me. Well written and flows well also.

Absoluitely delightful (I would guess even to a non-stamp-collector). Obviously it makes most sense to someone who was born in the UK, or who has studied its history. But an all-around good read.

This is a learning book and it gives you enough detail on commands and ideas to feel comfortable, but doesn't overload you with every detail that's what the man pages are for and this goes through lots of important commands sorted into various topics, then finishes off with a very well-written and clear treatment of scripting in the last section and this book has helped me advance my career it was how I learned how to walk in linux using the command line and i would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to build a better understanding of linux or the terminal and if you are having a hard time understanding how a terminal works, this book will help you find your way! It is a must read for any beginner who is trying to make a switch from Windows to Linux.

I consider myself a fiddler when it comes to programming. I know a little to get me by, but I often have to go back and look things up, which is why Nathan's series of books has been such a great tool for me. They always have an easy-to-use Table of Contents, and the book is parsed out in very simple language with lots of definitions and explanations. It doesn't jump around a lot.This well-organized book covers the history and setting up Linux as well as terminals, commands, and getting help. I have been a fan of this series for years now, and I would highly recommend them to anyone trying to pick up software coding.

Nathan has out done himself again. this is a very comprehensive look into the history and workings of the Linux, among other systems. The wording was easy to follow and the use of pictures, where needed was not overused. I found the tutorial well laid out, easy followed and in a format that I found it understandable at a first read through. Looking forward for similar tutorials by Nathan.

Linux is the second book of Clark's I've read, and he hasn't let me down. I'm a complete programming novice and even I could understand and learn all there is to know about Linux. His explanations are clear and concise, I had no trouble following along. Mr. Clark is my one stop shop in solving all my questions as a novice programmer. I had only one caveat: some of the darker illustrations were difficult to view on my Kindle (7th gen), however, it could simply be my kindle and didn't lessen my ability to take away my new found knowledge of Linux.

I’ve been a competent Linux user for years, but just recently have decided to become more of a real Linux geek. However, I gave it five stars because the things that I found useful were extremely useful. This is a very digestible book and an eye opener on just how much I need to learn. Highly recommend this for anyone to increase their knowledge of Linux operating systems.

Technology does not come easy to me, but my job has forced me to become familiar with Linux. I have read several of Nathan's programming books because he makes this subject that is so confusing to me understandable. He does not assume that the reader was born with any technical skills and explains the concepts exceptionally well. It is a great resource for a novice like myself.

I like this book. Bauer's selections of classic books are classics in her opinion. Another knowledgable person would have an entirely different list. I appreciate the book for what it is----- Susan Bauer's opinions. She has multiple degrees and she knows more than I know----but I am intelligent and I have read for many years. The first thing I did was go through her list and mark the books I had already read. Then I began reading chapter one, which was Bauer's excellent instructions for reading any book. However, it was basic for a real reader. Most of her suggestions are things I do without thinking. Next, I went through the book list, read her summaries and marked the books that interested me. Sometimes her summaries tell too much. I have just finished " Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "Pilgrims Progress" . These books have brought me great joy. As I read both books they were familiar, so perhaps I had already read them in school. Anyway, reading the two books as an adult was an entirely different experience. SO, Bauer's book, as an enticement has done its job. Just as importantly, I have found that some of her suggested reading absolutely does not interest me. "Well Educated Mind" has saved me an immense amount of time---I definitely will choose NOT to read some of the suggested books. As a comparison I am going to look into book suggestions by other qualified people Susan Bauer's book has stimulated me and set me on a trail of reading that was always in the back of my mind.

I've been out of school for many years now. Many times I have wanted to go back to college and take classes, but I don't think it would be a good decision at this stage in my life. I love this book because it challenges one to educate themselves. It not only inspires, but also gives one the how-to. I can't recommend it enough!

If you believe that "some books are to be tasted, others swallowed, and some to be chewed and digested", then I suspect you will enjoy this book. I found it extremely helpful in laying out a well thought out process for the 'chewing and digestion' of some of the more difficult texts.

...until now. I have found this a very helpful tool to fill in some of the gaps in my education. Well written, good suggested reading lists for each of the genres covered. I have not completed this book totally, but have done enough work to know that it is well worth the effort and time.

This book is a nice guide for broadening and deepening your reading variety. I used it to push myself into reading items I would have ignored. I like the authors suggestions for keeping notes on your reading. It has helped me not only understand more deeply but allowed me to review parts of the reading I had forgotten by the time I'd finishted the work. I recommend this book for anyone looking to expand and grow.

The Well-Educated Mind does a wonderful job of explaining how to go about reading with a purpose in an approachable and non-pretentious way. And by books, I mean not just any books, but some of The Great Books (key impressive music); which to some like myself, may be slightly intimidating if you are a decade (or two) out of university. (And never got around to reading any of these books while in said university). The author's approach is very straight forward, but her writing is anything but dry. She gives practical ways to break the books (which are addressed by genre in different chapters) into digestible chunks which make tackling these works perhaps more approachable than they are without a class syllabus, facilitator, or general plan. I am happy to have found this book and would definitely recommend for anyone looking to expand their horizons and library with some of the "greats". It's never too late to read!

I am only just getting into this book and I must say, Mrs. Bauer know's exactly what she is talking about. About to toot my own horn, but I can see that Bauer has her finger on what it takes to not only have a well-educated mind but also a refined one - an invaluable trait that all of us should aspire to embody.If you are interested in becoming a more refined and enlightened person, this book is for you. If you have zero appreciation for that, then you should go watch an episode of The Kardashians right now!

This book is ideal for anyone interested in reading and truly understanding great works of literature. It is perfect for anyone who is hard wired for a regimented system. I managed to do quite well getting through college without really ever reading and understanding the texts I was required to read, as an adult I wanted to try to read these texts and actually appreciate them. I concluded that perhaps though my comprehension was fine, my critical approach needed revising. I picked this book up because I was not quite ready to read the rather large "how to read a book" by Adler. I have since read both books and this one in my opinion, is a little easier to read. I. Recommend reading this first, then Adler's book after.I like "well educated mind" because it provides a system, and part of that is that she provides questions you should be answering on your various reads specific to each genre. This is immediately helpful in making sure you are doing more than just reading but actually engaging the text. She provides a system of journal writing that I have found quite helpful and now use for every book I read. Too many times I plowed through a great work and afterward had literarily no idea or appreciation for what I just read, this book was perfect to get me to truly understand great works.
