This book includes many short folktales from the Arabian Peninsula, and there are a number of photos as well which show how people live in these countries. There is a brief overview of each country and then the stories from that country. The book is about 120 pages long and is fun to read. I didn't know anything about the Arabian Peninsula, so one picture of a bunch of fishing boats was a surprise. There is more here than just sand! I thought that it is priced a bit steep, but the stories that are here are a good time, and you will have to decide whether the brevity of the book is worth the price the publisher is asking...

I was given this book as a gift. The introduction is an overview of each of the nations that make up the peninsula and also a brief history of the area, and it is fascinating. It was refreshing to learn about this area sans politics, so to speak.The stories are pretty much what one would expect of folktales - simple little tales with a moral. My grandchildren enjoyed the stories and delighted in finding the similarities in some of the stories to the fairy tales that are familiar to them.

In the introduction to his translation of the "Meditations" Gregory Hays observes that "[I]t has been a generation since [The Meditations'] last English incarnation." Hays further explains that he has attempted to present a readable, modern translation of Marcus' great work which still captures the "patchwork character of the original." I find that Hays's translation succeeds. He translates Marcus's reflections into a colloquial, frequently earthy, English in unstilted language and idiom that will be familiar to a modern reader. I think the translation is as well faithful to Marcus's thought. The reflective, meditative character of the paragraphs come through well, as does the difficulty of the text in many places. This is a book that will encourage the modern reader to approach Marcus -- an altogether commendable result.Professor Hays has written an excellent introduction to his translation which can be read with benefit by those coming to the "Meditations" for the first time and by those familiar with the work. There is a brief discussion of Marcus's life, his philosophical studies, and his tenure as emperor of Rome (161-180 A.D.) Hays spends more time on the philosophical background of Marcus's thought emphasizing ancient stoicism and of the philosophy of Heraclitus. He discusses the concept of "logos", a critical term for Marcus and for later thought, and argues that logos -- or the common reason that pervades man and the universe -- is as much a process as it is a substance. This is difficult, but insightful.Hays obviously has a great love for Marcus's book. He is able to offer critical observations which will help the reader focus in studying the Meditations. (For example, Hays argues that Marcus does not fully understand or appreciate human joy. He also argues that Marcus's thought takes an overly static view of the nature of society and does not see the possibility or need for societal change.)Hays discusses briefly the reception of the Meditations over the centuries. I enjoyed in particular his comments on essays by Arnold and Brodsky on Marcus Aurelius.The Meditations is one of the great book of the West and will repay repeated readings. When I read it this time, I was struck by Marcus's devotion to his duties in life as the Roman emperor. I got the distinct impression that Marcus would have rather been at his studies but kept telling himself, in his writings, that he had to persevere and be the person he was meant to be. It is a focused approach, to say the least, to the duties to which one was called.I was also impressed with the similarities at certain points between Marcus's thought and Buddhism. Other reviewers have also noted this similarity. Marcus talks repeatedly about the changing, impermanent character of human life and about the pervasive character of human suffering. He talks about controlling and ending suffering by understanding its causes and then changing one's life accordingly. There is a need to learn patience and to control anger and desire. More specifically, Marcus' understanding of perception and how it leads to desire and can be controlled by reason (discussed well in Hays's introduction.) is very Buddhist in tone. I have become interested in Buddhism and was struck in this reading of the Meditations by the parallels it offers to Buddhist thought.There is a wonderful paragraph in the Meditations where Marcus urges himself to persevere and not to lose hope simply because he did not become a scholar or a hero or the person of his dreams. What matters is being a good person and living in harmony with one's nature. This passage spoke clearly and poignantly to me as I reread the Meditations. Undoubtedly, the reader will find passages in this book that are addressed clearly to him or her.This is a book that should be read and pondered many times. Hays and the Modern Library have done readers a service with this translation.Robin Friedman

Amazon lumps different translations together as merely variations on how the book is delivered. In this case, the Hays translation is the hardcover, while the authors who translated the paperback and Kindle versions aren't specified. So use the tools available (look inside, free sample) to get an idea of the language used by the author and see if it's something you'd like to read, or if a different translation suits you better.

I am sincerely pissed that I was not provided a copy of this as a kid growing up. I have devised a work around to the whole "Not growing up with a father figure" issue. I have decided that Marcus Aurealis is my actual father, and Socrates is my great uncle and Thales is my grand father. I realize this sounds nutty to read but I honestly feel more in common with these thinkers then the absent XY chromosome donor.

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:This version:Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.George Long's version:From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

First, do we all recognize that the author of this text, Marcus Aurelius, was a Roman Emperor? If so, why have I not been forced to read this from a young age? This is quite possibly the most insightful, existential book I've ever read. Emperor Aurelius has given us wisdom in its purest form. This should be a manual for every human's life. Every sentence is mind-numbingly profound. This book is so good, that I might just have the entire text tattooed on my body. I cannot stress enough that the sagacity of this book is beyond what I have ever read. Definitely a must-read and a must-live-by.

Living up to its title, "Dark Knights" guides you, gently at first, then takes you on a raucous journey to the underbelly of society, where perp meets public, and cop intercedes: the Dark Knights crashing through the wall between good and evil, sometimes blurring them, but always overcoming them. Prepare to take what often feels like a mythical excursion to the subways and streets of a city groaning from an epic crime wave fueled by an unprecedented drug epidemic, exposing the reader to surreal if not difficult images, forcing one to try and look away, but you can't. Try as you may, you'll return again and again to these stories, where incredulously one must admit that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. Bryan serves up a copiuos helping of what many of us lack: the ability to step back and observe, objectively and unapologetically, the actions of those around us and whom we come in contact with, and our reactions. When you're a young cop with a gun and a shield, alone on a subway in the early '80's in the wee hours of the morning, anything can happen. And it does. Give credit to Bryan for bringing the Dark Knights into light, where we can all see them, not only for their glory and their shame, but for who they really are: men and women trying to do their job, keeping the city and its people safe.

Interesting tales, both humorous and some touching. My brother and several good friends were and are cops, so I was familiar with such stories, and especially the political hoops they have to jump through which make the job so much more difficult. Easy to read, nicely written. I am a Queens native myself and enjoyed hearing about familiar places. Especially surprised to find out that the author lived in Bellerose, the same small town in which I grew up! And as a retired nurse, I was used to seeing the dark side of life and death, I completely related to the black, politically incorrect humor. All in all, an enjoyable read.

The writing style is very good in this novel, I didnt have to struggle to read the very plentiful visual descriptions. It is written as a detective/cop would think which is fun. Most everything is deducted from a cops mind. The characters that are come across are those characters a cop might meet on his beat. Some of the scenes left me laughing out loud like I knew the characters personally. After reading the book I read the Authors Bio and was more than impressed of his work in the police department for 20 years. I have never read a book like this. I loved the style and the stories were great! I love crime TV and I found myself relating easily to the book.

I'm not a member of law enforcement, but I found this book interesting. While I felt City and NYPD details were sometimes too much and distracting, I laughed out loud at the stories of the cop crawling on his hands and knees through the diner, the supervisor with the pork rolls, and the annoyed dead guy! A recommended read for almost anyone.

The detailed location description were a bit too detailed unless you are intimately familiar with New York City. Otherwise, it is an entertaining journey through a policeman’s career.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The stories were interesting and entertaining. I will recommend to all my friends who enjoy this type of stories.

Spot on! As a transit cop myself, I can relate to these stories. They're absolutely true. Some still go on today, except rookies these days come spoiled right out of the academy with a sense of entitlement. They wouldn't have lasted a week back then.

Sioned Davies 2007 translation of the eleven medieval welsh tales that make up the Mabinogion is a delight to read. Her guide to pronunciation, extensive explanatory notes and indices of personal names and place names provide the background for readers coming to the tales for the first time to easily understand them.

I really liked this translation. It is easy to follow and the notes do clarify many things. I am brazillian and I'm doing my graduation research on the women of the Mabinogion, and I found this book very helpful with the introduction, the pronunciation guide, the notes and excellent bibliography. The author really seems to know and be passionate about the subject, something I always appreciate. I have no complaints about this book!

This is a group of 12 Welsh legends that feature King Arthur along with other kings. They were stories passed down orally and have mnemonic devices imbedded in them to aide in the telling so they sometimes sound odd to our modern ears. There is so much here that appears in current day literature. There are magical creatures and wells and rocks and carpets, shape shifting, giants, fierce warriors, fair maidens, unbelievably delicious food, and chesslike games, etc. everything that appears in modern day fairy stories and science fiction. The knights are always handsome, unless they're the bad knights and then of course they're hideous, the women are each more beautiful than the next. Decisions made quickly often have far reaching implications. There is a sense of immediacy. Anyone could die at any time or make a life long alliance. Magic, War, Love, that's what these stories are made of.I alternated between this new translation of Davies and Charlotte Guest's Victorian one and enjoyed both however Davies gives a wealth of background information that I found very helpful.

These stories come from a strange time. Though I have no other translation to compare it to, this one seems excellent, and the notes to the text are very extensive, should you want to go through them (contained in the back, not as footnotes). There is some Arthurian Legend involved, and though the stories in the Mabinogion come from a century or two after the original King Arthur, they seem very proto ... or just distinctly Welsh, King Arthur is more like a ghost or a god here.'Mabinogion' means "boy's tales" or something like that, and they are top-notch stories for anyone to hear... not quaint at all, not restricted to fantasy, some really had me thinking about stages of life. The stories are distilled from generations of storytelling, so you get that feeling of wisdom.Anyway, I highly recommend it, especially because there are few other works from the same place and time to compare it to.

Reading and studying about the Morrigan has been a journey that I have enjoyed.

This is my first venture into Welsh mythology, but that being said I really liked the explanations at the beginning of the book and the stories themselves. Good read if you like history and mythology. Only reason I gave four stars instead of five is because I'm really not feeling the audio book narrator.

I've read several versions of The Mabinogion, and this may be my favorite. It's clear without losing any of the poetry, but not loaded down with too much fanciful language to take away from some of the best myths in the Western world.

He loves it, he's into law, so coming from him I appreciate his input. Hes says this book is quite "instructional" and makes you THINK like a law-connoisseur not quite as a lawyer, but I guess he refers to the way it makes you think in terms of law (not justice) though. He's and my two cents so that's 4 between us.

Rejecting the usual approach to analyzing case law by first describing the facts, and then reciting the court's decision, Amsterdam and Bruner dig deeper, and describe the hidden decisions which are made when courts (and by inference, lawyers) decide what the "facts" are--and how they are presented. Their hypothesis is that those choices--while virtually never acknowledged, either consciously or unconsciously determine the ultimate decision in a case.One of the examples chosen is a pre-Civil War case holding that states did not have the right to interfere with slave catchers seeking to return escaped slaves to their owners. The case came to the Supreme Court as an appeal from a criminal conviction of a slave catcher for capturing a slave in Pennsylvania without following the procedures established by Pennsylvania. The Court held that the federal Fugitive Slave Law trumped any local laws, and argued that, to hold otherwise, would be to grant states a veto over enforcement of federal law.To reach this seemingly logical conclusion, the Court ordered its presentation of the case around the historic compromise between slave and free states at the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention, and depicted Pennsylvania's procedural rules as an attempt to sabotage this compromise.However, as Amsterdam and Bruner point out, the Court could equally have built its description of the facts (or, to use their paradigm, told its story) from a different perspective. If one looks at the case from the perspective of the purported slave who has been seized, without any opportunity to challenge his "return" to slavery under the laws applicable to every other resident of Pennsylvania, it becomes a case about protecting innocent people from the abuses of slave catchers...or, stated differently, the question is not whether federal law trumps state law, but whether slave catchers have the right to unilaterally declare someone an escaped slave, in violation of established state procedures for making those determinations. Viewed from this alternate story-line, the Court's decision becomes far less obviously right, and certainly more controversial.Amsterdam and Bruner spend much of the book establishing the following building blocks to their argument: (1) people generally organize the way they think about things in narratives...which generally fall into a few well established general patterns ("rise and fall of the tyrant," "conquering hero," "fall from grace," etc.). (2) In telling a story, the teller always makes choices about how to categorize the facts--what to include, what to leave out, when to start, when to stop, and how to present the facts. (3) Judges do exactly the same thing when they write opinions. (4) To understand what judges do, you have to understand the choices they make when they tell their stories (or, more formally, write their opinions).Their argument is highly persuasive. It does, however, become heavy going at times. While Amsterdam is one of the country's lawyers who with long experience, highly skilled, and devoted to abolition of the death penalty, in this book, the authors write like professors, not trial attorneys seeking to convince a jury. They are not going to be confused with John Grisham. Don't expect a light, fast read.However, if you are interested in a deeper understanding of what courts do when they decide cases, and want to have a different framework within which to think about decisions made by--in particular--the U.S. Supreme Court, then this book is highly recommended.

Beautiful fantastically-themed art that we will enjoy throughout the next 12 months during 2017. Bonus of this particular calendar are the nice big boxes on the calendar/day pages. I've had some calendars in the past few years where the text boxes are too small to write much of anything. This calendar has easy-to-read numbers in the "day boxes" and plenty of space to write an appointment time and reminder.

Wow. I can't believe they even had the nerve to send this. It looked like it had been in a rainstorm and then dried out. On top of that, it was bent and parts of the edges were ripped. The calendar would have been okay had it been undamaged. The graphics were not as colorful as I had expected. The seller should be ashamed of him(her)self!

Really neat! I wanted something other than nature that I wouldn't mind looking at for a month at a time. I also like that I can't see the writings on the next picture when I flip it. Big win!

I love this book! The sketchbook appearance of the drawings is perfect if you are planning or creating your own costume or period dress. Not having the drawings in color is a bonus, as you can imagine the design in the color you choose....there are notes and discussions of fabric types and some colors used in certain time periods, but overall this is a designer's treasure. Whether you want to be 100% accurate or if you are just trying to achieve a "look" of a time this book will be helpful.

There are hundreds of costumes, with a wide assortment from every time period. They are ALL beautifully rendered with accessories, umbrellas, belts, purses, dress clips, shoes, capes, cloaks, etc. and each article of clothing or accessory comes with an explanation of materials used and how it was employed. she even gives detailed drawings of the insides of these garments and drawings of old pictures with garments in use, which includes hair styles, etc. This book, however, is more for an advanced seamstress who has the skills to make their own patterns because none are offered here. This is the most wonderful book on my collection and is well worn with notes and bookmarks already. This book focuses on women's clothing almost exclusively, but that allows it to be thorough. I can't give this book enough credit. Every costumer of this time period should have a copy!

I purchased this book because I was hoping to find some inside detail of how the clothing of earlier era's were constructed, and this book did not disappoint. I was concerned about the description that indicated that the book was comprised of 'drawings' but when I received the book I was impressed and amazed by the detail. I must admit that there are times when I am so taken by the drawing detail that the construction was overlooked! This is one of the most amazing books I own, and I it is one that I return to time and time again when I have construction questions. If I were to change one thing...I would wish for an actual photo of the item to correspond with the illustration, then it would be totally perfect!

I needed to find out the general styles for some book illustrations during the Victorian era, and this was just the ticket. There are several examples.

Wonderful book. The hand drawn sketches in this book can be a little hard to understand, but lots of detail for each garment. No photographs. Only a few regency garments discussed.

Not only have I learned an amazing amount from this book, it has truly saved me from making very costly mistakes in selling vintage clothing. I adore period costume but good research books, especially when you are just beginning...are VERY hard to find. This book offers measurements, construction details and puts smaller accessories into context. Many times I would purchase a large box of antique clothing at auction that contained smaller items which would have me baffled. Countless times I find them in her illustrations. Pretty pictures are great, but her details will truly educate you. Thank you for this great reference. I wish you would do one entirely on personal accessories.
