Some one in a previous review listed this as a textbook, well it really is and I have found it very helpful. The history behind the development of a technology helps me to understand the reason behind the development and a appreciation of the technology at hand and at the present time. Nothing just happens. It evolves and keeps on until it theoretically becomes refined to the max.(and lots of times it leads to a new invention) This is a fairly good book. I think it will give enough information to get you to walking and to begin to understand the terms and what they entail. Now I understand on my interface, what the sample rate is, and the meaning of compression. This isnt everything but it gives the fundamentals.

Short and sweet, this was not quite what I was looking for. It's quite extensive in its study of the subject, but I wanted more of a "if this is what you want to do, this is what you'll need" type of book. This is more or less a text book.

This is an informative book about audio basics and audio workstations. It help me, a first time user of audio and midi recording better understand the subject. I still have to master the technical details of cubase (DAW) and the hardware I have that connects all the audio signals together in the computer (Lexicon Lambda). I recommecd this book for those "in the dark", like I was.

This book will depress you, but you get the information you need to understand. The underbelly of our Capitalist system has the habit of creating nice industrial towns that last for decades, and then along comes globalization and technology and these places get discarded into the pile of the forgotten and neglected. A cheap chemical, as the Soma pill from the Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, comes in and becomes the the way of life. Big Pharma and Big Agriculture and the devils in this book. Oh, by the way, this is a non-fiction work.

This is journalism at its best."Methland" is about the methamphetamine attack on rural America. Focusing on Oelwein Iowa, it's about the ordinary people who use meth, and the ordinary people who make it & deal it. And the reasons why they do.Globalisation has meant that the old industries (the farming, the rail work & meat packing) are largely gone, or have been changed beyond recognition. Local unemployment is high. What work there is, being done by low paid immigrant labour. Then a drug turns up (in large quantities) that delivers instant pleasure and relief from depression; it's also the only well paying job around. Who can blame anyone for getting in to it? But then the consequences become apparent. ...the addictiveness, the violence, the hideous self-destruction, the neglected children. And behind the scenes, pulling the strings, is big business (agribusiness, the pharmaceutical industry and the Mexican drug cartels) intent on maximizing their profits, with no or little concern for the lives they're destroying.But "Methland" is much more than this; it's also about the people who fought back to reclaim their lives and their towns. The fact that Mr. Reding faced quite a bit of blowback from Oelwein residents after his book was published is no surprise. I grew up in a small mill town where alcoholism was a way of life. Small communities always take great umbrage at being depicted in any negative light. This is based on an innate sense of insecurity. Some residents would rather stick their heads in the ground and pretend everything is hunky dory. This kind of attitude is childish and dangerous. Mr. Reding didn't set his eyes only on Oelwein but any rural communities who have been left behind because of globalization and harmful federal government inactions. He does an excellent job describing the history of methamphetamine, its effects of the body and what are the major contributors to its widespread use. The author gives very vivid, chilling descriptions of how the drug attacks the body, mind and community. The main contributors to this epidemic are convincingly depicted as the big agricultural companies, big pharmaceutical companies and Mexican drug cartels. Mr. Reding hits the nail on the head by stressing that this is not solely an issue of individuals lacking willpower or morals. The book is a very human, clear-eyed view of a drug that continually permeates our rural nation and how politicians and most citizens refuse to acknowledge its far-reaching, horrible presence. An absolutely outstanding, highly readable and important book.

I guess the first thing I would say to anyone considering reading this book is: can you stomach a truly scary story, especially knowing it's real? Even though the book is a few years old, I'm sure much of what it portrays is still relevant. As someone who has never had any experience with meth, and whose knowledge comes from what she sees on "Breaking Bad", I found this book to be very well written and very informative about this problem. I live in the Midwest and have read newspaper articles about meth busts, meth cooks and how people behave in the throes of the drug; however, I've never really read much about the depth of the problem.The author did a good job of bringing his research together and presenting it in a very informative, readable way. I do have to say that there were sections that literally gave me chills when I pictured what it would be like to live in a town such as Oelwein and to come face to face with addicts in the course of my daily life.Thanks to the author for his well-written and informative book--it must have taken a great deal of courage to put himself in to those situations in order to get to the real stories.

Methland paints a dismle portrait of what the "fly over states" deal with when their single industry run town goes out of business via a hostile take over. Rampent unemployeement during the reagan years feeds directly into the meth epidemic that still exists today.The poor, left without hope, working double and triple shift wage slave jobs while trying to make ends meet and raise a family in a failed local economy choose to either take meth to get them throu that same triple shift or sell it because there is no work or don't make enough.Reading between the lines, the author paints an inglorious picture of what middle America finds itself in. A place created by Union destroying venture captialists who leave a wake of broken dreams behind. And the vacuum is filled by low wage jobs, which then is supplimented by the sale or use of meth.Want to fix the meth problem? stop outsourcing jobs, stop people from voting against their own best interests, and get rid of citizens united rulling which put corporations ahead of the people of this nation.read this book.

Harold Schechter has done the research and presented it in a biography that answers most questions the average reader would have about one of Americas most notorious child killers and torturers. What he says is always based on the facts he has uncovered. For example, letters written by the boy killer in jail, though not found for many years, show that he was fascinated by corporeal punishment and torture. The mind of a boy psychopath is revealed in this book. Yet Schechter never indulges in morbid speculation or exaggeration beyond what his research suggests.

In another of Harold Schechter scholarly but so very readable books about serial killer, he points out that the good old days were not particularly beautiful, clean and pure, and free of violent serial killers, Jack the Ripper being an exception. With sewage and industrial waste dumped in rivers, lakes, and the ocean; the incredible amount of manure produced by horse-driven transport; the deplorable conditions found in 'the little red schoolhouse,' where the student-teacher ratio in large city school systems would cause current teachers to seek a different profession even it was flipping burgers; no sane person not blinded by nostalgia would consider 'the good old days' particularly good. Whatever problems plague us today--drugs, gangs, massacres of the innocent by the deranged, sensationalism in the media, corruption in our government--existed in the past. And that includes the serial killer, especially "Killer Kids." Murderous juveniles didn't suddenly appear with Columbine; like the poor, they have always been with us.Schechter recounts the life of one such "killer kid:" Jesse Pomeroy, called by the Boston press in 1872 the "Boy Torturer" among other names. He had tortured over a half-dozen children and butchered two more by the time he was fourteen. By the time he was captured Jesse Pomeroy was to become known as the "Boston Boy Fiend." And fiend he was as Schechter aptly proves in this tale of Jesse's reign of terror in 1870s Boston. As with all of Schechter's books about true crime, I recommend this one for it's fine writing, detailed psychological insights, and the strong sense of place that the author always evokes.

i read the true story of the psycho in the 1950's by the same author. these crimes happened in the 1870s. if there is one thing history teaches us, is that there where a lot of un reported crimes happening in those days. people just disappeared.i believe there where probably several people miss treated growing up and becoming killers as they aged.good thing today we have forensics. i recommend this book on history education alone.

Very well done-- factual, concise, and fascinating if you like true crime.

I'm from the Boston area, and while my whole family is in Chelsea (the site of much of the action) I had only heard about Jesse Pomeroy while reading The Alienist by Caleb Carr. I was quite excited to find out about Schechter's new book (thanks Amazon!). I actually became interested in true crime after the Columbine shootings, and have been reading about children who kill. From Mary Bell to the Liverpool boys who killed a toddler, to the Florida kids who killed the local bully, this subject has been endlessly facinating to me. Ok, so maybe it is a bit gruesome too. But I will say that with this book, Schechter hits the nail on the head. Children who kill other children have been with us for a long time, and we continue to give the same lame excuses: the media (for Jesse that was dime novels, for our recent murders its the movies and video games that are blamed), single mothers, and just plain evil.This book does not answer the question of why, but we get a glimpse into the mind of one of these child killers. It is quite chilling. Schechter's research is awesome and his writing style is engaging and his message is clear (and frightening) the next fiend could be living next door, playing in the sandbox!If this book and subject matter are of interest to you, I also highly recommend Cries Unheard: Why Children Kill; The Story of Mary Bell.

Thus was an excellently researched book about a very twisted individual. Pretty much everything!!

This was a fascinating book, as all of Schechters' books are but this one, perhaps because the boy was so young, really makes you go "wow, some people are just insane". It gives you a glimpse back in time to when it happened by painting a visual picture for you and then takes you into the psyche of those involved. Great book. Great story that is really, not well known and should be.

I have been writing C and some Objective C for a few years now. This tutorial hits a lot of the basics needed in both C and Objective C.

This book is great. I've only read a few chapters, but I've understood more in a few chapters than in the last two books I've read in Objective-C. For example, I finally understand what Typedef and @selector() are used for, compared to the other books that explain them in a convoluted way or just touch upon them briefly and then move on.I've read the Big Nerd Ranch guide and Stephan Kochan one, but this is by far the easiest read. I love it. Keep pumping them out man!
