I was hoping that this book of Ship Construction would have graphics defining how the ship is put together with photos and drawings in today's construction methods. Unfortunately it does not fill the bill. The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers' publication Design and Construction of Steel Merchant Ships is far better at illustrating the construction techniques from the mid 1950's. There have been updated versions subsequent to the book edited by David Arnott. There is also a better book put out by Reed's series on ship design which has line drawings to illustrate the construction techniques which has been updated over the years. I wish that Mr. Bruce's book did more illustrating of the bow structure, the stern framework, the double bottom tankers strength members, and the strength members and plating which are integrated to make the ship strong and seaworthy.

I'm certainly not a chilango (a native of Mexico City), but over the past 30 years I have made about 10 trips to this extraordinary basket-case of a city, the most recent trip being December of 2011. I thoroughly enjoy visiting there, but I am not blind to its problems and dangers. In my younger days, I'd most often go there alone; but even when accompanying someone who was new to the city, except for the occasional guided tour we'd most often walk or travel by metro or cab (and, as several writers suggest, it is in walking about it that one truly gets the fullest experience of Mexico City). Thus, I like to think that my knowledge of the city's broad center (where most of these essays are set) is fairly thorough. So, reading this fine collection of essays about life in the D.F. was, for me, a rather strange experience. Very often, I found myself saying, "Yes--that indeed once was true, but now . . ."First, the reasons you, as a possible visitor to Mexico City, should consider buying this book: Ruben Gallo's introduction, which sketches out the long history of the city and then critiques the usual theorizing of the D.F.--the nostalgic lamenting of the loss of Mexico City's former graceful status of the City of Palaces--in favor of a theory arguing that, especially since the immediate aftermath of the 1521 conquest, the city has constantly been remaking itself; all of the essays in the section called "Places," which still ring true to me; the various photo-essays, in particular Francis Alys' "Ambulantes"; Alma Guillermoprieto's "Garbage" (a subject which, for fairly obvious reasons, is something of an obsession for chilangos); and Elena Poniatowska's beautifully-told "The Earthquake," which focuses solely on the story, told in their own words, of a woman who happened to be rescued from her collapsed building by her nephew, yet which somehow ends up conveying, better than just about anything about the 1985 quake that I've read, the heartbreak of those terrible days (and the years that followed). Also, students and admirers of writing about urban spaces will find much to like and learn from in all these pieces.Now the note of caution: The possible visitor needs to know that some of these pieces have become dated in their details. They do indeed give one an accurate sense of the city as I found it to be from the early-'80s to early-'90s--roughly the period that most of these pieces were written. That time, suffice it to say, was not a happy one in the life of the D.F.: air pollution so bad that the State Department classified our embassy there as a hazardous-duty post; underemployment resulting in beggars, day-laborers, vendors and street performers (and many other, less-savory characters) clogging the sidewalks and delaying traffic on the main streets; trash everywhere; all-but-denuded green spaces--including Chapultepec Park; formerly-elegant and vibrant neighborhoods gone to seed; and clearly overwhelmed city services. However, over the years since this book's publication, the city has dramatically expanded public and alternate transportation (12 Metro lines built or under construction; light-rail lines extending into the suburbs; dedicated bus lanes and, more recently, bike lanes and rent-a bike stands throughout the city's heart); air quality seems to have improved a great deal; the Centro seems to be a desirable place to live now; in general, the broad middle of the city feels much safer than just about any other big city you can think of, including many in the States. None of this is to say that Mexico City is now some sort of urban paradise; and it obviously isn't Gallo's fault that some of these pieces seem less true now than they once were. It's simply to say that the potential buyer needs to know that the city that is these essay's subject has changed fairly substantially since their publication--in some cases, clearly for the better.

This Reader contains several stories that explain the background of various landmarks in the Distrito Federal. Each chapter makes a great day read and they are well-written and pertinent, even for frequent visitors.

I have a thing for both Mexico and for non-fiction. This interesting collection of essays about D.F. satisfies my curiosity.

This is a wonderful book, I strongly recommend it.

Overall, a very good anthology of diverse material on Mexico City. The focus on just the one city--the DF--is wise and unique: many readers/books would try to encompass all of Mexico or Mexican minorities or women in Mexico or whatever have you. But by narrowing the scope via geography and openly showcasing Mexico City as a geographical unit worthy of its own anthology (which it is, certainly) this book opens up many varied aspects of the locale from foodways to politics to history. Indeed, instead of having too-narrow a focus, in fact the book is far too short to come close to cutting into the deep layers of Mexico City, though it's a fine place to start--the best place insofar as social sciences I would say. My only complaints are:1) It's already very dated: we need a new edition of this fine book for it to address today's Mexico City. I am awaiting the day when anthologies will be websites instead of books and constantly updated akin to Wikipedia or Wikitravel. In many cases, the age of this book really shows though that should not discourage anyone from reading it because it does still offer a real wealth of insight.2) The book simply should have been longer. Aside from the cost of printing a slightly larger book, I don't see any real obstacle to making it longer, either, as many course readers number over 600 pages. This one clocks less than 350 pages and there are plenty of worthwhile essays on Mexico City in the public domain--historical documents, even--so copyright isn't a viable problem. The editorial approach taken has been superb: nearly all the included material is great. However, the editor could have sourced even more material to produce a far more robust book. "Readers" really serve two purposes: to educate a seminar student or other person on the topic at hand via reading the whole damn book or, to serve as a reference book for someone interested/involved in the subject. For the latter, the more material the better.I hope for a new edition of this book soon. For now, it's still very worthwhile despite my small misgivings

Awesome book. This books paints a picture of Mexico City like no other. It's a collection of 30-some essays and reportage. Some have a historical perspective (e.g., the Metro system just after it was built), while others are very recent. This isn't a guidebook, but it will give you a better understanding of the city's underpinnings than a stack of Lonely Planets ever will.Most of the authors are Mexicans; a lot of the essays are famous in Mexico, and appearing in English for the first time. There is a level of authenticity here that is not reached by competing books (e.g., David Lida's 'First Stop in the New World' -- which is more of an American journalist's perspective on things.)The writing is exciting, artistic, and well-chosen.

I'm writing this review not from the perspective of an Airframe and Powerplant student, but rather from the perspective of a pilot. I found this book to be very informative and well worth reading to expand a pilots knowledge of engine operating techniques. While it's probably a bit beyond what is required, I can't stress enough to students and fellow pilots that the more they know about the heart of their airplane. The knowledge presented in this book is applicable to nearly all aircraft engines in operation, in fact I can't think of one that isn't really covered except a scram jet.

would be better if it had higher quality pictures, more color pictures, less page jumping for diagrams and pictures for examples.

I loved Steven Farmer's "Animal Spirit Guides" book,and this is an excellent pocket companion of that book...I like that I can stick it in my purse or bag and when an animal appears in my path,I can immediately look up what it might be trying to tell me.The animal kingdom has so much wisdom to teach us...nature is the best teacher we can have.It's very easy to find a specific animal in this book,it's very well laid out.If you have an interest in Shamanism or are just curious about what messages our animal brothers and sisters can provide,this would be a good place for you to start :)

Probably should’ve sent this one back. It’s a hassle. I’m not sure why the descriptions of the spirit animals and their meaning is so different from anything that can be read online. I was excited about this purchase. A disappointment.

This is a wonderful pocket text to help people understand what messages each animal carries with them. Oftentimes, we may see an animal in the wild and think nothing of it, but if we look deeper into WHY we are seeing that particular animal, we can find some insightful and inspiring messages which could help us better understand ourselves and even our life's path.

This is great to keep in my car. I have his larger book which I use regularly. I'd purchase again and gift friends w/ it.

I love this book. I've read Ted Andrews and Stephen Farmer and they are both in depth. However, at times you need a quick, down and dirty reading on an animal. This book is exactly what I've been looking for to keep with me on my Kindle devices while traveling. Then I can look up the very in depth meaning later. I highly recommend this book to anyone studying animals!

WE do really LOVE this book and keep it as a reference bood for our Families and Friends to enjoy and receive as gifts also, and we try to learn from this book about all those Animal suits in our lives who unexpectedly find their ways into our lives from the Universe and the big picture, and what possible reasons these events happen, and what may be our connections to our loving Animal Spirit Guides, and the possible lessons we should be paying attention to and learning from for our best benefits. The only short-coming with this book and others on this topic, is that invariably most of the time with many of our Families and Friends, we may not be able to locate ALL of our Animal Spirit Guides between the covers of any one book on this topic, but for those which are included, WE find this book an interesting read and helpful information which WE really do pay attention to and most often WE can really relate to what is presented and find not only value but logic to why very specific Animal Spirit Guides have come into our spaces and how can we best put this information to good use to help OUR lessons for OUR incarnation this time around. And, most all of our giftees of this book have similar commentaries, and WE continue to share this book widely. Dorothy Stephens's memoir of the two years she spent living with her young family in pre-independence Kenya is deeply felt, sensitive and intelligent. Her language describing Kenya's land and people is both gorgeous and unsentimental. The reader feels drawn into every scene with her, experiencing the beauty and the strangeness she felt as she made the unsettled land her home. From the smallest things, like learning the Kenyan words for grocery staples, to the more complex, like learning to fit into the existing colonial system while maintaining her sense of all Kenyans' dignity, Stephens shows how an "ordinary" white American can have an extraordinary effect on her surroundings. Without flaunting their views in the face of the British, Stephens, her husband, and their three children make friends with the brave, educated Kenyans who will soon lead their country into independence. They do this even though the British prefer to treat Kenyans as servants and maintain the status quo, and resent Americans like the Stephens who have different ideas. The book offers a wonderful background to help understand the current unrest in Kenya. The book is in many ways Dorothy Stephens' love song, both to Kenya and to her daughter Kelly, the little blonde two-year-old whose hand she holds throughout much of the book. Kelly Stephens, encouraged to explore by her parents world views, died in the early 90s during a volcanic eruption in Indonesia. All proceeds from the sale of the book go to a foundation in Kelly Stephens' name which funds education for Indonesian school teachers.

As soon as I started reading Kwa Heri, Dorothy Stephen's book, I felt as if I was taken away to Kenya. Not only did her writing make me feel as if I was going on an adventure, but what an adventure. I can only hope to share this book with everyone I know, because I can't say enough about it, I just have to give them a copy of it.

I loved Dorothy Stephens' Kwa Heri Means Goodbye. It successfully transported me to another place and time, making me feel as if I myself had been to Kenya in the late 1950s. I also enjoyed it as her personal adventure, in which she was yanked from a comfortable, traditional life and whisked off to an exotic and potentially very dangerous place. With dry wit, she conveys her sense of dread about the trip, citing horror stories of the Mau Mau uprising and malaria, and describes a nerve-wracking flight across the ocean with hard-partying pilots. She introduces us to very memorable locales, characters, and wildlife--include safari ants and a wild monkey. A thoroughly informative and enjoyable read!
