About the Author

Jeff Augen, currently a private investor and writer, has spent over a decade building a unique intellectual property portfolio of databases, algorithms, and associated software for technical analysis of derivatives prices. His work, which includes more than a million lines of computer code, is particularly focused on the identification of subtle anomalies and price distortions.   Augen has a 25-year history in information technology. As a cofounding executive of IBM’s Life Sciences Computing business, he defined a growth strategy that resulted in $1.2 billion of new revenue and managed a large portfolio of venture capital investments. The Bottom Line: After reading this book, I was able to learn a few new things, incorporate them into my trading, generate more winning trades, and increase my profitability and income. Since that is why I purchased and read the book, I give it five stars.The book does take a theoretical approach, and is best consumed by someone who understands day trading; technical analysis; options and associated terminology; option spreads, straddles, strangles; option pricing elements including delta, theta, and implied volatility. With that foundation, you will be able to take the author's strategies and apply them to today's opportunities. I would suspect one would encounter difficulty understanding the author without such a foundation. The book explains the authors insights and observations on implied volatility collapse, accelerated time-decay, and pinning. It is up to you to translate those insights into something useful within the context of your trading plans.This bears repeating: if you are seeking a ready-made system or a step-by-step guide, look elsewhere and look to pay a lot more money. (Wouldn't it be nice if you could buy a ready-made system at this price? If there is such a thing, please post the link!) If you are looking for a few invaluable tools to add to your kit that will increase your returns, this is a great book. It explains option pricing behavior in the days leading up to expiration; behavior that is predictable enough for you to build trades to take advantage of it. The more you know what's going to happen, the more money you can make.What did I get from the book? First, the author's detailed description with examples demonstrated the impact of Implied Volatility collapse on the last two few days before expiration; so impactful that it becomes as influential, and sometimes more influential on option prices than the movement of the underlying stock price. As a result, my pre-expiration trades are structured to take advantage of that. Second, I learned about how to build option positions immune to undesirable price movements in the underlying stocks, while still positioned to generate healthy profits in a day or two. As a result, I risk less time in the market and make more money. Third, I learned that periods of high volatility (like now) offer even greater opportunities, allowing me to leverage market uncertainty (fear) for greater profits. As a result, I modify my trading plan to focus on selling options when volatility is high and buying options when volatility is low for greater profitability. Fourth, I learned to emulate the author's approach to studying historical data to gain insights to the future. Knowing that history repeats itself gives me an edge that I can use in the zero-sum game of options trading. (I did not, however, buy any databases, build spreadsheets, or write any programs.)After reading this book (less than $20 for the Kindle version), I am able to accurately predict option pricing behavior in the days just before expiration. I find that information to be invaluable.

This book is very dense and thorough. Although weekly expiry choices are now available the same principles that Augen speaks. The author gathered some very granular data about intraday option prints which is hard to come by historically and really applied it in application for this book. Yes the book does have actionable strategies that experienced option users can apply. This book is not for beginners or even mid level users of options as the comprehension of concepts requires a thorough understanding of many dynamics ranging from extrinsic value compression/expansion, implied volatility crush and general theta decay and being able to loop all these concepts together in sync instead of understanding in singular form is vital to get the value from the book.

The book is VERY interesting, but in an academic sort of way. If you are looking for anything of practical value, look elsewhere.The author has done a lot of work - he collected an extensive (and expensive) historical database of minute-by-minute option prices, and then did an impressive analysis of this historical data. He presents relatively clearly the results of this data mining.The main finding are that "pinning" occurs routinely on expiration day (not a big surprise anyway, and you get no hint how to guess to WHICH strikeprice the pinning will occur, which is THE whole point) and that there seems to be a pattern as to how an option's prices goes to its intrinsic value (if any)over the course of Expiration Thursday and Friday.However, this is about it.There is some vague and general discussion how the results show that it SHOULD be possible to have some edge when trading on the day of expiration and 1 day previously, but no clear strategy emerges.It sounds intuitively appealing that on the last two days before expiration options fair-pricing algorithms can get a little out offocus - just enough for you to exploit. Sadly, this book does not show you how to get this edge.It shows examples that purport to show how the author got an edge trading in the past, but does NOT even spell out clearly which strategies are used.By reverse-engineering the examples given, I derived 6 strategies the author used: - ATM short straddle - Just-OTM Straddle - Ratio-Call (2x and 3X) - OTM ratio call (3x) - Long Straddle).I built two excel models, one for Expiration Friday, and one for Expiration Thursday, where I cut-and-paste the options prices on these two days at various times of the day, and the model then analyzes all combinations for of the 6 strategies I derived from the text and calculates the result of applying these strategies along the lines the book recommends : open a position around 10am, AND CLOSE IT AROUND 2pm-3pm;Sadly I have to report that after trying this for a few months on about 3-5 shares, I found no useful strategy - typically, IF I could guess in advance which strike prices to use, I could get an edge, but there is no pattern that i could find as to which of the 6 strategies would win with which combination of stike prices.(and if I COULD guess which strikes will be "correct" to make for which strategy, I could win on any day, using any strategy ... )For example, on a recent expiration Friday I collected all option prices for AAPL, and analyzed for all 6 strategies:Strategy --> Winning Combination of Strike prices=========== ===============================================ATM short straddle --> Wins for strikes starting One "notch" below ATM and going up to 3 notches above ATMJust OTM Straddle --> Same as above (not surprising - for these strikes, this is the same strategy)3x Ratio Call --> Wins for buying a call at 1-3 strikes below ATM and selling 1-3 strikes above ATM2X Ratio Call --> Same as above (at this strikes, it IS the same strategy)OTM ratio Call --> Same as above (at this strikes, it IS the same strategy)Long Straddle --> Wins for strikes 1-3 below ATM on both legsSo, to win, you have to (1) Correctly select the strategy from the above 6 possibilities and (21) select the correct combination of strike prices to use.If you can do that then You are smarter than me and probably rich enough to not be reading this review anyway ...Another problem, mentioned by another reviewer also, is that Fees and Bid/Ask spreads are ignored - and they are NOT negligible:The typical "win" is on the order of $0.30-$0.40.A round-trip (buy & Sell) fee for a 2-leg position is on the order of $25 (e.g. $12.95 is the minimum fee at OptionsXpress).For a 10-contract position, assuming I win $0.50 per share, the total win will be $500, and just the fees are 5% of that.So - you will have to trade LOTS of contracts, which is not a recommended situation for Risk-management. (A 10 contractposition on a $20 stock is already a $20,000 position)Bid-Ask Spreads make this much worse, and larger positions will not fix them. Assume a bid/Ask spread of $0.25 (not a rare thing) and assume you willbe able to open the position at about mid-point of this, but when you close, you have to pay at the bid/ask (and remember you are closing late in the dayof expiration Thursday or Friday, where even the author says Bid/Ask spreads are likely to widen). So, a round-trip (open/close) will cost you about 50%of the Bid/Ask spread. in this example, this means it costs you about $0.125 per share - leaving you only $0.375 from the $0.50 you were hoping to gain.Add the two effects together, and you find that if all goes well, you will get $350 out of what was supposed to be $500 gain - and again,this is *IF* all goes well ...---I'd give it 3 stars on research quality and interest, but Given the above, I find the title (and the blurb) misleading, and am docking it one star.Bottom line - Academically interesting, but not practical.

Unless I am missing something, this is pretty much the only book on this subject. And what a subject it is. Most option traders are desperate to get out on expiration day if they still hold same month options; this author says this is the day to get in! I plan to use his strategies to see if they work; based on my previous experience, I believe that they will as most options are absolute true value on Friday morning of expiration day and even a small underlying stock price change does impact the option price dramatically. An excellent book, well worth reading. I would have liked to see slighty clearer language and perhaps better summaries at the end of each chapter. However a valuable addition to the subject of options.

This book is a great overview of all things fiber related. From the purchase of an animal straight through processing the fiber this book touches on all of it. I will definitely be gifting this book to those who are just starting out on this adventure. I've owned fiber animals for 10 years now and I think this book is a great resource to have on my shelf.

NOTE: I received this book in exchange for an unbiased reviewI am a self-admitted fiber enthusiast, but have yet to raise fiber animals. This book gave me a great introduction to sheep and goat breeds (even alpacas, llamas, and rabbits) that would be suitable based upon my fiber needs. I had no idea that there was such variation in the fleece based upon breeds. Admittedly, I thought wool was wool...definitely not the case. So while my property is too small to adequately raise sheep, I now know what to look for in a fleece at fiber swaps and even which breeds to mention based upon the projects I wish to create. And worth mentioning is that Janet takes you through the entire of process of raising sheep/goats, pasture management, breeding, proper nutrition, sheering process from animal to mill. She even included some recipes for natural dyes that I am really looking forward to trying out.

Disclosure: I received this book in exchange for my unbiased review. I was also given a preview of the book prior to publication for endorsement purposes.This book is an excellent resource for any folks considering keeping fiber animals! As a tender to a small flock of Icelandic sheep, I feel that a book like this would have saved me a lot of frustration and struggles during my first years with my flock. Even though I'm reading the hardcover, I wrapthe wonderful, wise words of W.S. Merwin around me.His poems infuse my life with an even keener sense of appreciating the "now."His words keep me in constant contact with my sense of responsibility for our planet.He's an inspiration for taking action to preserve, conserve, and plant trees, as well asrecognizing the magnitude of the impact that each being carries. The geese, all animals,relationships, taking better care of the earth and each other,as well as experiencing the sorrows and the joys in life.He is dedicated to the craft of poetry and its vital role of importance in our lives.I wish I could thank him in person, but since that's not realistic, I will continueto do my best to honor him in my own way, by taking time to observe,experience, appreciate, write, take action, and reflect upon the beauty in the worldand making the most of each moment. Carpe Diem!

If one volume could sum up adequately W.S. Merwin's artistic development and illustrate his place in American literature with some justice, "Migration" does the job. At least as importantly, it gives us the poet's own opinion on the poems for which he might want to be remembered, much as Nathaniel Tarn inspired Pablo Neruda to do in the selection of Neruda's poems that Tarn oversaw. I bought "Migration" at roughly the same time as The First Four Books of Poems and The Second Four Books of Poems and cross-referenced his selection from those titles in "Migration" against the whole. While I still have one or two favorites that did not make the cut, I found the choices he made consistently better-inspired and more timeless than the poems that surrounded them (though overall Merwin has remained a consistent and astonishingly fine craftsman throughout his career). For those who want to go further back than Merwin's more recent books for Copper Canyon Press should not be disappointed.

A gift for my poetry writer husband. It was very appreciated and so happy it was signed.

Merwin's journey to maturity can be experienced. A sometimes arduous journey but with many viewpoints of inspiration.

Though the title impied there were new poems in this volume, I found some of my favorites, butdidn't notice any new ones. Never mind, they are wonderful, and I liked this book so much, I purchaseda copy for a friend and published poet, who's poet in the schools, Grace Grafton, who is familiar with Merwin's writing. That made both of us happy.On a practical level, it is easier to schlep a single volume with you than three of four,when what youwant is 'La crême de la crême.'Makes a welcome addition to any collection, a great gift to introduce Merwin, and a pleasure to readthe smooth, ariculate poetry that is food for the soul.Antoinette Constable

Before getting into my review, I want to say that I am super glad I did NOT read Tim Challies' 1-star review of this title until after I'd finished reading "Moving Mountains" cover to cover. Had I seen that review first, I would have thought twice about purchasing this book. That would have been a BIG mistake! Reading what Challies wrote caused me to wonder if he and I actually read the same book. It also gave me pause to wonder what his axe to grind with Eldredge might be.I am no John Eldredge groupie. There was a time when I followed and supported his ministry. But that was quite awhile ago now. So, I was surprised when Amazon recommended his latest book to me. I'm glad they did. The author's gift of words -- his voice -- shines through every page brilliantly!Eldredge makes it clear prayer is not a quickie wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am two minute sort of thing. He uses the word "intentionality" to relate this idea. The book is excellently balanced with supporting Bible passages and resources for further study. I found I'd already read a number of the books by other authors he recommends.He uses the phrase "there is a way things work" as an overall theme to connect the dots. I enjoyed this little creation to reveal that I was about to partake in one of those deep mysteries he'd uncovered. I sometimes need someone waving a caution flag that says "slow down... don't rush through this part."Another thing I like is Eldredge's use of his own experiences in prayer. He describes them and then provides the prayer words he uses. I find that immensely helpful, akin to standing on his shoulders, rather than having to flounder away on my own. Prayers he's developed are printed in full at the end of the book. I get the feeling he really does want his readers to delve into this prayer adventure.One thing I wish he had developed further was the idea of provision. One of the resources John offers is Dr. Ed Murphy's "The Handbook For Spiritual Warfare." It's one of those I mentioned earlier that I've read. Appendix B in the back of that book is a prayer that I think might be one of the inspirations to Eldrede's "Daily Prayer." There are several parts to it emphasizing God's provision which are only slightly implied in "Moving Mountains." I'd prefer he plumb the amazing provision of God deeper.John Eldredge has sold millions of copies of his bestseller, "Wild At Heart." This book is on that level and I hope he sells millions of "Moving Mountains," too. My recommendation is that you read the entire book cover to cover first. That way you'll have the 30,000 foot view... the big picture. Then go back and take it slowly, applying..... no, PRAYING.... what John Eldredge has revealed.As I said in the headline, based on what I've gleaned from this book, if I had been told I was terminally ill, I'd want John Eldredge praying for me. "Moving Mountains: Praying with Passion" holds my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

I have read many of John Eldredge's book. They have challenged the way I see Christ, mostly for the better. I normally do not feel uncomfortable with his writing. I read all books with a Berean perspective. Some of the teachings within this book take steps into extra-biblical methodologies, or at best thinly connected scriptures, which I have a hard time connecting the relevance of. He skirts the edge of some teachings within charismatic circles, which he states and then almost contradicts himself so as to not to offend non-charismatics.On the positive side of things. John teaches that Jesus is not a distant God. He is an intimate and close friend that loves and cares for you. He encourages one to approach prayer in a conversational way. He clearly shows how God speaking directly to you is biblical and normative. He teaches you to pray expectantly, which all true believers have a right to do. I have grown deeper in my prayer life as a result of this book and his Beautiful Outlaw book.What I am finding difficult to reconcile scripturally: His Daily Prayer is formulaic and long-winded. This flies in the face of what Jesus taught in Matthew 6:7. Proverbs 10:19 might apply as well. It cannot be for God's benefit. His implication is that it is for you to center yourself. Maybe it is just me, but recitation of a long winded script doesn't focus me. It moves me away from Christ, not towards him. It also take a LONG time. If I was a theologian or in ministry, my day would allow time for the 15-20 minutes to go through the DAILY prayer. I just can't see where this is God honoring.This book takes you into the area of binding and loosing and to claiming authority. This is very controversial. There are very reputable theologians on both sides of this camp. Beware and research prayerfully on this. Satan likes you to either think he is not there or that he is behind every tree. Many who get into binding and loosing see him behind every tree. Jude 9 applies when dealing directly with Satan. If another archangel isn't going to tread into "binding" Satan, should we?Praying in tongues: I think John handles this very well. My personal experience in this area is that it doesn't occur through my will. There have been times when the Spirit has taken over me in prayer. Most times (and all times when I am publicly praying), it is in my everyday language. He just takes over my mouth. I have had a time or two when another language formed in my mouth. Never were they when I was praying before others. Of course the bible states that such times (praying in tongues before others) must have an interpretation. What John teaches in this respect does seem to be consistent with my experience, as if my opinion has any weight. But this is my chance to speak. Write your own review if you disagree. Again, this is an area of much controversy.In summary, I believe you need to read many of John's other books for this book to be helpful. No Christian author has it all correct. Test everything through scripture and in prayer. Also understand, just as John points out that Jesus never healed the same way each time, he also doesn't work with each person the same way. He's bigger than that. If you are looking for a formula on prayer, there isn't one.

This book is great and phenomenal. If your prayer life feels sort of dull read this book or get the audio book and listen to it. Ponder what he's saying. Go back into your Bible and look up the scripture references. Ask the HOLY SPIRIT of GOD who raised CHRIST JESUS from the dead to show you and teach you all things just as CHRIST promised he would and it will change your prayer life forever. It's not John's book that does that but it's a guide back into the TRUTH, the WAY and the LIFE who changes it.

It is not possible for me to reduce to words or overstate the significance of the message in "Moving Mountains." It has met me squarely in my brokenness, and forever altered my understanding of prayer.Like a superior sermon one experiences when you feel as if the pastor's teaching was directed specifically at you, nearly every chapter overflowed with what I need to learn and comprehend about prayer. And I have only now read it through once completely.Next move is to go back and begin even more serious study. This is a book, like the Bible from which most of it is adroitly woven, that will be dog eared, highlighted and referenced again and again. God had used John Eldridge mightily herein.

I am both reading and listening to this book and have done so several times, absorbing more each time. Shortly after I started reading this the first time, my husband entered the hospital for what ended up being almost a month and two surgeries. I literally searched through this book to find models of prayer for different situations and prayed through many of them....sometimes I was so tired or "brain scrambled" that I needed rhe words in front of me....God is indeed good and I praise God for John's obedience in writing this, (and the annointing that I see in his writing).

Excellent Book. Great information to combat the first year of errors that I have done many times over. Now with my new company I am passionate about the products and want to avoid some of the pitfalls that have sabotaged my other attempts. This has given me ideas as an outline so that I implement a plan. Also reading about some of the past mistakes of those who have made it and what they did to keep going has inspired me to keep at this until I succeed. I no longer fear that tiny little word "NO" and instead look at it as just an everyday part of network marketing but it doesn't throw me for a loop (well most of the time). A definite read for beginner and seasoned who might be discouraged.

This is nearly perfect for the Introductory Latin classroom.Pros: The illustrations are perfect, especially as learning tools and contextual tools. The conversations increase in length at a reasonable pace. The ability for students to make their own conversation in a similar vein is awesome.Cons: Use of grammar and vocabulary is all over the place. Depending on your school's curriculum, you may need to supplement ending information earlier than expected. However, the grammar and vocabulary is more or less intuitive for the student who pays attention to every small detail. Most students, without help, can muddle through the grammar and vocabulary well enough.Overall, I am so glad I stumbled upon this supplement. It has done wonders in my classroom. Students are talking. They are communicating. Their fear of Latin composition is diminished and they are more comfortable making mistakes.

This is a well organized introduction to conversational Latin, a branch of Latin instruction harking back to the early Middle Ages. Fortunately, our age has recognized the value of teaching Latin as a living, spoken language. This book accomplishes this through graded conversations that introduce very basic and important vocabulary. The Appendices are a great addition, in particular, Appendix III, which includes not only very basic words but also many, many useful phrases, as well as Appendix VI (Grammar Notes), which provides a wealth of clarifications in the matter of parsing. Starting with this student-friendly book and then proceeding to Traupman's "Conversational Latin for Oral Proficiency" can provide a working knowledge of the innards of Latin, its basic nouns and verbs, its adverbs and prepositions, and the way to use them in real life. If you are interested in Latin as a language, you will find this book very appealing and useful. And you can rest assured that the knowledge acquired through it will serve you well when you tackle the literary treasures of this immortal language.

Its a nice little manual for beginner conversational Latin. I would have liked the appendix to have recordings to go with it, but it appears most texts out there have no recordings for appendixes. I will be using this as an additional resources for my elementary Latin class.

I have this as a "go-to" resource at my school.At first I got it because it does exactly what I NEEDED very badly to liven up my Latin lessons. Easy, everyday immediately useful conversations. It supplements my textbook (a reading based approach, and for other levels a grammar intensive course) very well.Now, why is it a "life saver"? I caught a cold. It happens. A sub took my lessons. Of course, the sub doesn't know any Latin. All I had to do was say, "Have the students practice units 15 and 16. The audio is on the web. Present in pairs. Write and memorize a new variation to present when I return."I don't know of any other Latin resource that I could entrust a sub to do that with. After this experience, I downloaded all the audio files from the author's web page and made an audio CD for just these occasions.Now, at the beginning of each school year, when the principal asks us to submit a emergency lessons for substitute teachers I merely print out the above instructions. Q.E.D. I'm done.Oh, and this new edition is even better. LIFE SAVER!

Excelent material for dinamic course. It permit an use practic of latin language

I had been looking for a book like this that can easily be used in classes and focuses on short and simple conversations that students can practice with small variations each time.I'm teaching some small medium and small groups in my home and this book makes it easy to accomplish a new goal every class. The art work is quirky too, so they like it's unique style and simple lessons. The explanations are plain and simple so that the students can practically teach them selves.After studying the lessons in the book we try to put them to use in other situations while practicing with each other.I'm waiting to see what the next book will be like.

I got turned on to this text with the first edition. This new one has fixed the errata of the first edition and added a lot more material. Same easy to use format which set it apart from other Latin conversation texts. I hope there will be a 3rd edition.
