Being an MP in an overseas theater of war like Vietnam is a unique combination of policing, and dealing with the constant stress of living and working in a combat zone far from home. War stories are compelling, but Christensen's book goes beyond that. His willingness to be open about his own reactions provides an intimate window into the complex stew of intense, life changing emotions experienced by combat veterans both during their deployment, and their reintegration into civilization when they return home. He also provides compassionate and sensitive observations on the impact of the war on the local citizens and the veterans he had to arrest. This book will help any combat vet and their family who reads it, and I hope many do. Those who have not served will also have a better understanding of the emotional sacrifices cops and combat vets make to keep the rest of safe.

Totally enjoyed this book. Mr Christensen is a wonderful writer and story teller. Great incite to the crazy world of the rear echelon MP. He was not in combat but the stress was out this world. And you can hear it in his stories as he get into his year in Vietnam. As a former MP(& police officer) I can feel what he is going thru day by day. I did not work 12hours days day after day so I have only a little incite to his tired, stressful world. He also writes about post Vietnam and a little of his life, but I get what he is trying to convey to us readers. I got this book with his other book "Cops True stories of the Paranormal" which also has a per Vietnam story when he was a K-9 handler in FLA. That is also a great read.

This is a great read. Hard to put down. Perfectly captures the raucousness that was Saigon. For someone who grew up after the war and often wonder what the Saigon of our parents and grandparents were like, this book is eye-opening. You don’t get the Saigon in the history books here. And it’s not the Saigon that your parents like to talk about. There are some very memorable passages about drunken GIs, bar girls, and street urchins. I came away liking the author a great deal. I’m Vietnamese-American and I was skeptical what this book has to offer. I can say that it gave me a lot.

The average American has a certain viewpoint about the Vietnam War, mostly gleaned from lots and lots of movies. This book gives a different outlook, as Loren Christensen gives the reader a personal insight into what it’s like not only with “boots on the ground,” but in Saigon itself, as a military police officer. Both horrific and hilarious (sometimes both in the same story), Christensen takes his easily-identifiable “everyman” writing style and lets the reader tag along through his adventures on the streets and alleyways of a city surrounded with war on all sides. You won’t put this book down without having a new perspective on what it was like to actually be there, surrounded by friends and foes... and not being able to tell which is which.

Christensen is a prolific writer, from basic martial arts to co-authoring some standard works on combat psychology to some very respectable fiction. This is a memoir of his time as a Military Police officer in Saigon. The book provided a lot of insight into a number his works, and is a remarkably candid look into the mind of a young martial artist embracing the dual roles of cop and soldier. The stories are great to read, and the lessons have real substance. It is rare for an older man to be able to take a hard and critical look at the young man he was, yet to also embrace that young man and tell his story with its triumphs and shortcomings. In addition, the reader gets a fairly unique snapshot of the Vietnam war from a less conventional perspective. Whether the reader is interested in history, policing, martial arts, or just good story-telling this is a rich little book. Enjoy!

I have read hundreds of books on Vietnam since being drafted in 1972 but this book is special. It brings an entirely different perspective to that war. Mr. Christensen's Saigon MP experience shed a light on what it was like to enforce laws in a foreign land-during a war! Each brief chapter in the book highlights another of the author's experiences with lawbreaking GIs and Vietnamese. You feel like you are riding along as the author faces a myriad of harrowing situations where nearly every perpetrator is armed and dangerous. Particularly moving were the later chapters as the author struggles to assimilate back into civilian life. An exciting, dramatic, and at times humorous book. After reading Policing Saigon I intend to purchase the author's books on self defense in case he needs me on a ride along someday!

This is a very engaging, detailed look at what it was like for an American soldier working on police detail in Saigon during the Vietnam war, and also gives a glimpse into the lives and minds of ordinary soldiers. Of course, no book can explain a war fully to someone who has never seen and felt it, but this is perceptive and vivid enough to be enlightening.

Incredibly story, well told, no holds barred. As an Army brat, military wife, and EMS professional, I can attest to the trauma that this man has been through. My father went to Vietnam multiple times. Our primary herbalist/physician is Vietnamese. The truth of this story shines on every page. I recommend this book to people with PTSD, people who love the military, people who hate the military, people who want to know more about what life is like on the other side of darkness.
