I purchased this book over two years ago in anticipation of travel to South Korea. It was a difficult book to engage--before, during, and after--my stay in Korea. I love travelogues and books on travel over typical travel guides as they bring a traveler's perspective to the experience. There is a fine line, however, the author balances in order to bring the experience to the reader and not make it about the author himself. It sat on my bookshelf all this time...and I still couldn't bring myself to finish it. "To Dream of Pigs" sat among a boxful of books I just donated to my local public library.
It describes so vividly the backstreets of South Korea that you can see the pictures by reading. North Korea seems to be real axis of evel as President Bush claimed. Money is everything in South Korea and people even dream of furtune that is a pig. Leatherdale, the author/traveler describes what normal tourists can't see. You must read it.
