From the Back Cover

YOUR WORST DAYS ARE NEVER SO BAD THAT YOU ARE BEYOND THE REACH OF GOD'S GRACE. AND YOUR BEST DAYS ARE NEVER SO GOOD THAT YOU ARE BEYOND THE NEED OF GOD'S GRACE. We know we need grace. Without it we'd never come to Christ in the first place. But being a Christian is more than just coming to Christ. It's about growing and becoming more like Jesus-it's about pursuing holiness. The pursuit of holiness is hard work, and that's where we turn from grace to discipline-and often make a big mistake. In The Discipline of Grace, Jerry Bridges offers a clear and thorough explanation of the gospel and what it means to the believer. Explore how the same grace that brings us to faith in Christ also disciplines us in Christ. If you've ever struggled with what your role is and what role God takes in your growth as a Christian, this book will comfort and challenge you as you learn to rest in Christ while vigorously pursuing a life of holiness.

I've read a lot of Christian books. Growing up in the church, Christians are already very prone to be "booky" people. And couple that with my love of reading, and I've become a Christian book consumer. But this one stands alone.Perhaps it was the timing of my reading it: I was a Freshman in college. I have always struggled to balance legalism with license to sin (anti-nomianism). The Discipline of Grace is all about staying out of these two ditches on either side of the road that is the Christian life. I struggled because I wanted to pursue godliness and holiness so much, but found myself doing it to gain God's approval. And in other seasons, I would almost justify my continuing sin by banking on God's grace. Enter this book.Bridges shows how grace actually teaches and trains us (Titus 2) and we actually use the good news of the gospel and the love God has already given us to motivate us to pursue holiness. It's a high view of grace/justification and high view of holiness/sanctification. I had never heard this message in my entire life.Preaching the gospel to yourself has become my mantra for my entire life since reading this book. I try to get it into as many hands as I can.*A great companion book to read alongside this is "A Gospel Primer" by Milton Vincent - which was actually written as a response to this book.God bless you, Jerry Bridges.

In the preface Jerry Bridges draws a distinction between bing saved by grace and living daily by God's grace. He believes that many Christian's understand(Ephesians 2:8 'By grace are you saved...')but to live each day 'By God's Grace' is far less understood.Something that Bridges is challenging believer's to think about is that salvation(Justification and Glorification)is all by God's grace(but Bridges contends that many, perhaps not fully realizing it,believe that Sanctification is performance or works based. The author is fully convinced that-"...the entire Christian life from start to completion is lived on the basis of God's grace to us through Christ."(the apostle Paul corrected theChurch at Galatia for this type of mindset-'having begun in the Spirit are we perfected in the flesh').How important is it to have a proper understanding of 'God's Grace'? -"....if a person does have a false notion of grace,it probably means he or she does not really understand the Gospel."Mr.Bridges gives this caveat about 'Living By Grace 'it assumes that the reader understands and has experienced 'saving grace';and therefore the one who is saved by grace also needs to daily live 'By The Grace Of God'.In the chapter 'Grace-Who needs it?' he brings out something that some may balk at-while most would acknowledge that we all need grace(it is the amount of grace that one needs,in Bridges judgement, that may raise a few eyebrows)the godly author contends that the zealous missionary needs as much grace as 'The Hard Living Sinner'.Some who question this may ask,How can this be? Bridges reasoning has the support of 'The Scriptures(I believe)-"...the currency of our good works is debased and worthless before God." In other words 'The godly Christian Missionary' needs to rely on God's grace(hourly, daily)to live in a manner that pleases God,'The Hard Living Sinner' needs 'The Grace Of God' to 'Turn And Live',apart from God's grace neither can live in a manner that is pleasing 'To Their Almighty Maker'.Jerry Bridges quotes C.Samuel Storms from his book 'The Grandeur Of God' to help solidify his his point-"Grace ceases to be grace if God is compelled to bestow it in the presence of human merit." If God is obligated to bestow grace because of human merit,or most withhold it because of the unworthiness of the recipient, then human merit would trump 'The Grace Of God',and this can never be.How can our sins continue to be forgiven, when we continue to sin until God calls us home? Some may think that they've sinned so often that they have exhausted their credit with God.In the atonement of Christ, how much forgiveness is available, for a person who is 'In Christ'-An Infinite amount. It cannot be exhausted. If one thinks it can be,they have an understanding of God's grace and forgiveness that is based on their performance or their good works. This assumes that they continue to fight against that which is opposed to God and themselves(the world, the flesh and the devil).I am convinced that at least three of Jerry Bridges books are destined to be considered modern classics,if they are not already-The Pursuit Of Holiness,The Joy Of Fearing God and Transforming Grace.

EVERYTHING by Jerry Bridges is deep, convicting, and biblical. You have to read it slowly and thoughtfully, not because it is written complicated, but because it demands contemplation and intergration.Table of Contents:1. How Good Is Good Enough?2. The Pharisee and the Tax Collector3. Preach the Gospel to Yourself4. We Died to Sin5. Disciplined by Grace6. Transformed into His Likeness7. Obeying the Great Commandment8. Dependent Discipline9. I was born into a Christian family and attended an evangelical church all my life. I had all this stock knowledge of what the Bible was about and ideas on how a Christian was "supposed" to behave. But there was no love in my heart for the Lord. What I sought to live was a MORAL life. I did not live out the gospel in its fullness and did not understand the meaning of LIVING BY GRACE... until the book TRANSFORMING GRACE!After reading that, I decided to buy this discussion guide to use for my personal bible study. I really immersed myself in the Bible readings and seriously reflected on the questions because I was SO TIRED of the performance treadmill. This book has COMPLETELY CHANGED my perspective on what it means to live by grace. Bridges patiently and painstakingly lays it all out in the companion book "Transforming Grace" and this discussion guide enables us to participate in the discussion, to really think about why we hold on to the ideas we hold on to. It compels us to study this wondrous tapestry of God's grace. We are not only saved by it, but we live by it. I came face to face with the love of God, I came to know Him in a deeper way. I no longer view Him as a God with a clipboard, checking off a list of things I am doing or not doing. But I view Him as as a magnanimous, loving, wondrous, holy, and enchanting God!Realizing all this has changed my heart. I actually desire to obey the Lord! I obey not out of legalism anymore (although I still DO fall into this trap sometimes), but because I have come to know Him as a God of grace. I praise and thank God for using Jerry Bridges to enlighten my darkened mind. For illuminating the beauty of the gospel. PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK if you feel burdened in your Christian walk and your motivation for living for the Lord is coming from all the wrong places!
