I used this text for teaching a high school classroom Java (first year teaching programming.) Before we obtained this text we were using a free MOOC via edX (a Java class provided by some teachers at Purdue University.) My students and I found that online class frustrating and poorly designed, so I began looking for a textbook. My students, almost without exception, feel like they've learned more after reading chapter 1 than after 5 weeks of the edX course online. The style is clear, the pace is fair, and so far it seems to be an excellent fit for first-time programmers. ALSO, the copyright is the Creative Commons type, which means I was able to legally make a copy of this text for each of my students (at no cost to me, just to my school district's copy shop.) Also, in addition to providing each student their own free copy, I was able to share with them a link to a free pdf version online (for easy reading on their phones/tablets.) Finally, there's a free version of the book online that is interactive (i.e., while reading the book you can enter actual code to practice content.) Overall, I'm very pleased with this book, and recommend it. (Caveat: I haven't used any other Java texts, and I'm a brand new teacher so take that into consideration. If you're looking for a much more thorough and in-depth text for Java, I've been told by experienced teachers that "Big Java" by Cay Horstmann is excellent.)

I am a computer science student and I highly recommend this book. One of the things a lot of people struggle with when learning Java is that to learn one new term, you have to learn another. For example, what is an object? It's a blueprint for a class. What does a class do? Describes an objects state and behavior. What are state and behavior? etc. etc. etc.The best thing about this book is that it introduces terms one at a time and breaks them down to where they are easy to understand. It is an easy read and I wish I would have discovered it sooner.

This is the best book on programming I've read (and I've read quite a few over the years). The text is accessible to the novice programmer, but also manages to preserve a great deal of intellectual depth.

I loved _Think Python_ by the same primary author. It is a very readable and well-paced introduction to programming, and also teaches a great deal about the Python programming language.This book attempts to do something similar, but in a different language: Java. The problem is that the Java programming paradigm - how it is used in practice - is very different from Python, and I don't think this book is really "Java-ish." Their intro to programming is fine, but as an intro to Java, it falls short. The level of Java reached in this book is elementary - you will be forced to supplement with something else. E.g. generics, comparators, are not covered.TL;dr I wouldn't recommend this book to learn to program (better is _Think Python_), and for experienced programmers, I definitely wouldn't recommend it to learn Java.)

This is a good book. It offers a nice foundation. It is not overly hard to follow, but it still covers important details. It will not teach you everything there is to know about Java, but it is a really good start.

I’ll start by saying this is one of my sons favorite books, his favorite has always been This Little President and I was hoping this would be a nice addition, so it does do the job, however I have a problem with the scientists chosen. In fact, every scientist on the last page getting a mini blurb I think could have deserved an actual page over some that were chosen. Not all were bad, but I think at least 3 or 4 of the pages could have gone to a much more interesting scientist. I don’t think it’s a bad idea to shed light on some lesser known scientists, but for a children’s book highlighting only a few, I’d love it to focus on someone more well known.Similarly, I think this book did a great job of showing that women can be just as important as male scientists, since their are more women than men in the book, however Rachel Carson and Annie Easley are household names that I think should have been included.

My 20 month old son asks me to read him this book at least once a day. He likes it that the pictures are colorful and the text has a good cadence. I like it that they included a range of scientists from different disciplines, as well as scientists from different cultural backgrounds with relatively equal proportions of men and women. This gives children the important message that people from all backgrounds have made scientific breakthroughs, and that the highest echelons of science are not reserved for those from a certain demographic group.

We have all the books in this series and love this newest edition! My 4 and 6 yr olds loved hearing about the scientists, and as with the other books we pick the ones wtheubfound most interesting to learn more about. I also love the diversity of the scientists: they come from different fields of science and several races are represented, and females make up about half.

This is a great little little kids book. Yeah it’s not gonna educate you 100%. But it’s like Bearenstein Bears. Take it for what it’s worth IMO. I’m glad there’s alternatives out there.

It’s a cute book but little presidents reads better and is a little more engaging.

I have thoroughly enjoyed Maine on Glass. The text and visuals work together beautifully, and I am in awe of the amount of research that went into both the introductory text and into each description accompanying the visuals. Also, what could have been dry, factual documentation was instead engaging, witty, and informative - and had me repeatedly looking from text to post card/photo. The interaction created among the book's authors, the readers, and the visuals provided me, as the audience/reader, an enjoyable opportunity to study and learn Maine history.

I love this book! The images are beautiful and really capture old Maine.

Historic photos accompanied by fascinating stories of Maine between 1909 and 1950 kept me glued to this book for several evenings. Published by Tilbury House in partnership with the Penobscot Marine Museum, Maine on Glass features 200 black and white photos taken all over the state. This wonderful contribution to Maine’s history was created by Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., the Maine State Historian, Kevin Johnson, the Penobscot Marine Museum photo archivist, and Bill Bunting, Maine’s foremost interpreter of historical images. From resorts to hunting camps, farms to lobster shacks, huge historic homes to large steam ships, brass bands to village schools, they’re all here. The photos were selected from tens of thousands of glass plate negatives created by the Eastern Illustrating Publishing Company of Belfast, a collection that is now located at the Penobscot Marine Museum. And trust me, the museum is now on our list for a visit sometime soon. Many of the photos were taken for postcards, very popular at that time. Eastern was, in fact, the nation’s largest manufacturer of glass plate photo postcards. Let’s take a brief walk through the book. Here’s a photo of the “State of Maine Camp” at Chimney Pond (now part of Baxter Park), and a few pages later, the “Triangle Filling Station” in Ellsworth. Remember filling stations? Many of the astonishing old homes pictured here are long gone. Quite a few burned including the Mayor Hanson house in Belfast. But later on in the book, I recognized two historic Queen Anne homes in North Lubec, before I read the caption and story. Linda and I have driven by those homes many times on our way to two of our favorite hikes in the area. I got a real kick out of how folks dressed in those days - very nicely, for sure. Three guys fishing at Kennebago Falls – one of my favorite fishing spots – are sure dressed a whole lot nicer than we do these days. I can’t imagine fishing in a dress coat! And here is Monhegan, almost treeless, with the inn the only major building on the entire waterfront. Linda and I wrote a travel column about that inn just last year. The old steam ships and motor vehicles are impressive too. And I love the farm photos, particularly the old hayrack with the team of ox in Phippsburg. Every story is so interesting. I read some of them several times, before moving on. The story of the Farmington Canning Factory – with a photo of folks husking sweet corn – brought back memories of my grandmother packing sardines in Lubec. And then, on page 149, there was the North Lubec Sardine Camps, where seasonal workers lived. I loved this 1907 story, written by a state labor agent:"Children are employed more numerously in Lubec, including North Lubec, than in Eastport. Coming around the corner of a factory one day, I saw a little girl at a tub, washing her hands.“The fish scales stick awfully,” she said.“And what does a little girl like you do?” I asked.“Oh, I’ve been cutting. I cut two boxes today,” displaying two checks for five cents each… she said she worked with her mother when she wanted to; was six years old; and her people came from one of the nearby towns and lived in a camp for the season.These camps are owned by the proprietors of the factories and rented at a small amount… They are small buildings, close together on either side of a lane and with very primitive sanitary arrangements. The people live very simply. The families come in large numbers and their homes are closed." I can only thank Earle, Kevin, and Bill for this wonderful book, which I am sure was a labor of love.

I'm going to assume the pain has virtually taken over your life. And you just can't take it anymore.If, like me, you're hoping this might be the one that reveals the secret to fixing what is ruining your life, keep looking. It's not that it's a terrible book, not at all--but if you're at all conscious and resourceful, you already know that a good night's sleep is critical to your health, that sugar is bad for you, that meditation really is a panacea, that negative self-talk is harmful . . . . Kale smoothie, anyone?I think what really tweaked me is that, for a book whose title offers the promise to "End Chronic Pain," the author is apparently addressing only those with what might be called "chronic pain lite." It is assumed that readers are fully able to take her initial and foremost advice: get a full night of good quality sleep. Then: when you rise from your good night's sleep, do the Five Tibetan Rites. At this point, if I were only able to do those two things, I would truly feel like I was on the road to salvation. However, where does this assumption leave those of us whose bodies literally won't allow us to sleep through the night, let alone perform the exercises? The effect is to make you feel hopeless from the start.

Interesting ideas , but I was looking more for a self help book, this book suggests therapy, massage, chiropractic.... on and on. Had to revisit chapters in order to get the meaning, not a smooth read.

This girl is my spirit sister! Both Greek and advocating for natural health. I feel her advice is very sound and trustworthy. Lots of great information and worth a read if you value quality of life. She’s very well educated and I trust her.

The book has good information but the Dr. is not available here in the US. Wish there were more Dr.s like her here that treat the whole person.

Great book with helpful tips that get to the root of chronic issues and pain. I am reading it a second time and have already easily incorporated some of the suggestions from the book into my everyday life.

This book is a treasure written by a gentleman who is himself a treasure and with whom I've had the great pleasure to speak. He has been a missionary (25y) in Japan and has spent his life loving and teaching others of God's great love for them.I've read and have a number of books on this subject and this author speaks from a loving, compassionate heart to those that have been confused with the Watchtower doctrines, as well as giving clear, knowledgeable explanation as to clarification of that confusion. Those opinions that state that he doesn't know his subject are, indeed, themselves obviously lacking in familiarity of both WT and Biblical doctrines. If you have a love for and desire to reach the precious souls that are confused and spreading unbiblical doctrines and false, twisted assumptions imposed upon the true gospel message, this book is an ideal choice.The Amazon seller had this great resource out to me in a flash and as always I so appreciate Amazon and their associates.Thanks so much with blessings, pb

Different perspective on how to witness to JW's without getting argumentative and tangled in circular reasoning with their many doctrines. Many ways to penetrate and get them to independently think about what they have been taught by the Watchtower and if the Bible actually backs it up.

This writer has a great approach, when dealing with the subject.

This book provides good though-provoking questions on doctrinal points to bring up regarding Watchtower theology. More importantly than the content, Wilbur emphasizes a different approach on how one brings up these points. When discussing religious beliefs, there is a tendency to want to "win" the argument at all costs. Wilbur reminds the reader that a person joins a religious community either by a) being born into it or b) having some emotional need met. The actual doctrine is rarely the initial drawing factor.Wilbur emphasizes establishing a long-term relationship with the Jehovah Witness. It is only through friendship and a Christ-like love that you will be able to penetrate a closed mind and get them to think critically about what the Watchtower teaches. Jesus said that we (his followers) will be known by our love; this book captures this idea in an insightful way.

Excellent, informative book. Good ideas for witnessing by having them question the weaknesses of the organization firat.

I would recommend this to anyone that knows a Jehovah's Witness. The best way to get to their hearts is with love, confrontation and arguments won't get us anywhere. This book tells you how to do that and make them see the truth and light with patience and love. It has great information about the Watchtower, their shady history that needs to be known and great bible verses to share with the JW. Make sure to always be in prayer as you lead your friend to the real truth!

This is a drawn out method, but it works, as I can attest. Ask leading questions (not about doctrine, where they have the answers memorized) that lead them to think. In my case the Holy Ghost Repair Service of Denver worked on me for three months to lead me from Hinduism to Christianity. At times I became frustrated, but there was not one argument in the whole three months.The author provides hundreds of questions and possible answers they might give - including staring at you blankly since no one ever asked about that before.
